Be it known that 1, Hammer ROLAND Meenmn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Atherton, in the State of Queensland, Commonwealth of Australia, civil engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Privies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of privies and has for its object to provide a hinged false seat, a selfclosing cover to the same and means whereby, when the cover is raised, the false seat shall .be raised in a selfacting way to enable the appliance to be used as a urinal.
The invention is applicable to privies used in systems of underground drainage and to dry pans and in the case of the latter provides for the sprinkling, in a selfacting the pan as the 11d way,-of a disinfectant into closes on the seat. 1 I

A spring 15 is placed at the side of the appliance or at both sides if desired, and is attached at its ends respectively to the main and false seats. The tension of the spring or springs will'be such that same will raise the false seat 7, after the cover is lifted, to a position at an angle of about 70 legrees with the fixed part 8, but when the lid or cover closes over it the combined weight of the false seat and cover will be suliicient to overcome the spring or springs and the parts 7 and 10 will be lowered gently to the position indicated in Figure 1.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a cover or lid that will be self closing and to that end the parts have been devised and arranged.
If the false seat be relieved of the weight of the lid the spring or springs will react to raise it, but if it be pressed down to horizontal position and occupied, the springs are again compressed. The lid 10 is then in the position shown in Figure 2 wiich is one at about right angles. to the occupied seat, in which position it will lie flush or parallel with the face of the flange on the stop 12, with the button 18, that may be lined to the lid, within the recessed or un- 'dercut part of the stopand below the shoulder 14?.
It will be understood that the lid 10 is hinged to the false seat at a point a little forward of the point where the parts 7 and 8 are hinged together which allows for a certain amount of leverage between the false seat and lid equal to the distance between their respective hinges. lVhen therefore the seat is no longer in use and the sprin 15 reacts to raise it, it being borne in mind that the two parts immediately prior to the false seat rising were at right angles to each other and the lid against the stop 12, the
upward movement of the false seat will cause the rear-edge of the lid to be canted backwards and upwards into the recess in the stop. As the upper part of the lid is against the fixed stop it follows therefore that the lid will be brought into intimate contact'with the knuckle 1 1 and thereby impelled forwards to meet the rising false seat on which it will rest, covering the opening therein and sprinkling the disinfectant powder into the pan as the lid and seat 7 close on the part 8.
The appliance may be used. as a urinal and cleanliness and hygiene observed by the spring or springs 15 causing the false lid to widely open immediately the cover 10 is lifted, thereby disclosing the open pan or pedestal, as the case may be, to the user; if, after use the lid be inclined forwards, the whole will close in the manner above explained.
Referring to the self flushing device as illustrated in Figures 6 and 7, the false seat '7 is fitted at one side with a plate 19 that extends for some distance beyond the rear edge of 7 and is fashioned as indicated in Figure 7. The outer end of the member 19 shaped a sector and is provided with the holes 20 in any one of which the end of the flushing chain 21 can be held by the bolt v The object of this arrangement is to provide for adapting the invention to various makes of flushing apparatus in which the bell of one may require to be lifted'further than in others to actuate the flush or alonger pull may be required. By connecting the chain 21 in a hole selected in the lever end the travel of the chain can be regulated and the length of pull varied. In the chain near the top a weight 23 is connected which wei 'ht is only slightly lighter than the weight required to lift the flushing bell in the cistern. Thus, if the bell will need a pound pullto lift it the weight 23 will be about 5; pounds in weight, the balance of weight required to start the flush being supplied by the reaction of tliespring 15 when the lid 10 islifted. Thus, when the false seat rises under the influence of its spring, the lever li) will be rocked and the chain pulled to effect the flush.
It will be evident that the end of the lever 19 may be supplied with additional weight sufficient to act in place of the spring 15, the whole of the parts being disposed and arranged almost in equilibrium'so that when the false seat is relieved of the weight of the lid 10 the parts will operate as the seat moves upwards. Should it be necessary, additional weights may be added according to the pull, required to operate a particular make of flushing bell. When the appliance is to be used as a urinal the lid 10 will be lifted by hand when the spring 15 will widely open the seat 7 to operate the flush.

Any fixture in the position of the part 12 and upon which the lid can be rocked may be employed but the form of stop as shown has been found convenient and efficient.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a privy, in combination, a false seat hinged to the main seat and a lid hinged to the false seat slightly forward of the false seat hinges, a fixed stop on the main seat immediately behind the rear edge of the lid which the lid can come when CJI open, a lower frontal recess in the stop and a knuckle thereon against which the lid im-.
pinges whenthe false seat rises after being used.
2. In a privy, in combination, a false seat hinged to the main seat, a lid hinged to the false seat, a fixed stop on the main seat behind the lid against which the lid can come when open, a lower frontal recess in the stop, a knuckle thereon and a disinfectant receptacle in the lid in the floor of which receptacle are perforations, for the purposes explained.
3. In a privy, in combination, a false seat hinged to the main seat, a lid hinged to the false seat, a fixed stop on the main seat behind the lid against which the lid can come when open, a lower frontal recess in the stop, a knuckle thereon, a disinfectant receptacle in the lid, afioor to the receptacle that is one half perforated and a lower annular projection from the lid below the said receptacle, as and for the purposes specified.
4:. In a privy, in combination, a main seat,
a false seat hinged thereto, a spring or springs between the main and false seats, a lid hinged to the false seat slightly forward of the hinges thereof, a block or stop on the main seat behind the lid, ,a frontal recess" in the lower part of the stop and a knuckle thereon against which the lid impinges when the false seat is raised from the main or fixed seat.
