DEVICE FOR AUTOMATICALLY CLOSING THE 00mm or SEATS or GLOSETS, ooivr onEs, 1 AND THE LIKEQ Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 12, 1913. Serial No. 789,467.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Moses M. MAnoUsn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the-city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for The object of this invention is to provide a device that is simple, inexpensive and one that may be readily applied to the present cover and seats now in common use.
A further object is to provide a device that will automatically close the cover upon the seat, the closing of which being controlled by the upward movement of the seatwhen weight is removed therefrom.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 represents a plan View of my device placed in position on a seat of a closet or commode. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section taken in the plane of the line A-A of Fig. 1, the cover being shown raised in dotted lines. Fig. 3 represents a view of the same, the parts being shown in the position which they assume when the weight has been lifted from the seat, the cover having been pushed to a position where it will close by gravity, and Fig. 4 represents a transverse section taken in the plane of the line BB of Fig. 2.
The seat is denoted by 1, and is hinged at 2, to a back member 3, which is fixed to the commode 4, or other closet, by any well known and approved means.
A cover 5 is provided for closing upon the seat, which cover is also hinged at 2, to the back member 3. The cover has secured to its under side an annular gasket or ring of rubber or other resilient material 6, lo-
catedso as to engage the seat 1 when closed and form a seal between the cover and seat, thereby preventing any odor from escaping between the same.
To automatically close the cover 5 when the commode or closet is not in use, I provide means controlled by the seat 1, adapted to engage the cover 5, which means is con- '-structed, arranged and operated as follows:
A push lever? is mounted torock in a hous- .ing. 8 which is secured to the back member 3, by screws 9. The push lever 7 is pivoted at 10, in the housing and has two arms 11,
12. A plunger 13 is fitted to slide vertically .111 the back member 3, the top of which plunger engages the arm 12, and the bottom of which plunger. is-adapted to be engaged by an arm 14 fixed onthe seat 1. The parts are so arranged that the push arm 11 of the lever Tis normally thrown forward, in the present instance by weighting the arm 12.
hen the seat is down and the cover raised, the lever will be .heldat the limit of its rearward movement by the arm 14 on the seat 1 engaging the plunger 13. When the seat is permitted to lift, it will permit the lever to rock forwardly causing the push arm 11 to force the cover forwardly past center, thereby causing it to drop to its Patented Apr. 6, 1915.
closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The housing 8'also acts as a stop for limiting the opening movement of the cover 5. To cause the seat 1 to lift when the weight of the person using it is removed, I provide springs 15 located in cups 16 in the commode or closet 4, which springs will normally only hold the seat lifted away from thecommode, but when the cover is closed upon the seat, the added weight of the cover will cause the seat to compress the springs until it rests upon the commode.
It is to be understood that while I have shown this device applied to a commode, it is obvious that I wish to cover the same wherever it can be advantageously used.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit my- Isgelf strictly to the structure herein set forth,
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a back member, a seat hinged thereto, a cover for said seat hinged to the back member, and a weighted push lever controlled by the upward movement of the seat and adapted to engage the cover for closing it.
2. A device of the character described comprising a back member, a seat hinged thereto, a cover for said seat hinged to the back member, and means controlled by the upward movement of the seat for closing the cover, said means comprising a Weighted push lever adapted to engage said cover and an arm carried by said seat for engaging said lever.
3'. A device of the character described comprising a back member, a seat hinged thereto, a cover for said seat hinged to the back member, and means controlled by the upward movement of the seat for closing the cover, said means comprising a weighted push lever adapted. to engage said cover, an arm carried by said seat and a plunger interposed between said lever and arm.
4. A device of the character described comprising a back member, a seat hinged thereto, means for holding the seat. in a lifted position, a hinged cover for said seat, and means controlled by the upward movement of the seat for closing the cover, said means comprising a weighted push lever adapted to engage said cover, an arm carried by said seat and a plunger interposed between said lever and arm.
5. A device of the character described comprising a movable seat, a cover for closing and depressing the seat, said cover being fitted to open rearwardl'y past center, a stop for the cover, means for normally lifting the seat when the cover is open, and means controlled by the upward movement of the seat for throwing the cover for- Wardly past center to permit it to drop by gravity onto said seat, said means comprising a weighted push lever housed in said stop and adapted to engage said cover, an arm carried by the seat and a plunger interposed between said lever and arm.
In testimony that I. claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this tenth day of September 1913.
