Inserted in the large bore of the counterbore 12 and abutting the bore shoulder 15 thereof is a chrome plated nipple 16 having a bevelled end 17 for cooperating with one end of a cylindrical nipple 18, likewise preferably chrome plated, whose other end is secured by means of a nut 20 to one port 21 of a drainage T 22 on which is mounted a vent pipe 23 leading upwardly to the atmosphere through the roof 24 of the building in which it is located, and provided with a wire mesh screen cap 25 at the top thereof to prevent the entrance of leaves, birds, rodents, or other foreign objects.

Application May 19, 1953, Serial No. 355,913 1 Claim. 01'. 4-216) This invention relates to a ventilating toilet.
It is an object of this invention to provide a ventilating toilet wherein the odors will disappear almost instantly into a vent pipe leading to the atmosphere.
A further object of this invention is to provide a ventilating toilet having means for assisting the natural ventilation of the toilet to draw all odors therefrom into a vent pipe leading to the atmosphere through the roof of the building in which it is located.
Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a ventilating toilet also having means for reducing or eliminating the gurgling of the fluids in the toilet hopper and connecting sewer pipe as the fluids are being flushed from the hopper to the sewer.
Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a toilet hopper wherein the rim to the hopper opening is provided with a toilet seat having a forwardly projecting lip at the rear, and a rearwardly projecting lip at the forward end to thereby reduce the size of the opening and cooperate with the human body in reducing the possibility of escape of odors through the seat open ing while occupied, so that the odors will more readily exhaust to the vent pipe to the atmosphere.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a seat cover for use in a toilet seat wherein the seat covor has a yieldable sealing means on the bottom thereof for cooperating with the top of the seat itself, and wherein the seat itself is provided with a similar yielding sealing means cooperating with the top of the toilet hopper, but having an opening at the forward end thereof whereby to provide an air entrance leading to the vent pipe at the rear, and thus, conducting the odors to the vent pipe.
Briefly, this invention comprises a toilet seat hopper and seat and cover thereon wherein the hopper has an exhaust opening at the rear inclined upwardly for connection to a vent pipe leading to the atmosphere, the toilet seat having means for cooperating with the human body so as to reduce the likelihood of any odors escaping through the seat while it is occupied, a seat cover having yiedable sealing means for cooperating with the toilet seat when it is closed, the toilet seat itself having yiedable means sealing the sides and rear of the seat when occupied to the rim of the toilet hopper, but leaving an entrance openeing at the front end thereof for air to pass therethrough and conduct and lead the odors to the vent pipe, a further feature of this invention being a connection from the sewer pipe just below the toilet seat hopper to the same vent to the at mosphere to thereby reduce or eliminate the gurgling of the waters or fluids as they are flushed from the toilet into the sewer pipe.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention comprises the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, claimed and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view partly in section of the toilet hopper seat and cover and remaining details of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the toilet seat.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the toilet seat cover.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 2 show ing the seal.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the atmosphere discharge top end of the vent pipe.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view of the connection from the toilet seat hopper to the vent pipe.
There is shown at 10 a ventilating toilet in which this invention has been included. This ventilating toilet 10 includes a toilet hopper 11 having a counterbored opening 12 extending through the rear rim 14 thereof as shown in Figs. 1 and 6. Inserted in the large bore of the counterbore 12 and abutting the bore shoulder 15 thereof is a chrome plated nipple 16 having a bevelled end 17 for cooperating with one end of a cylindrical nipple 18, likewise preferably chrome plated, whose other end is secured by means of a nut 20 to one port 21 of a drainage T 22 on which is mounted a vent pipe 23 leading upwardly to the atmosphere through the roof 24 of the building in which it is located, and provided with a wire mesh screen cap 25 at the top thereof to prevent the entrance of leaves, birds, rodents, or other foreign objects.
Extending downwardly from the T 22 is a second vent connection 26 having a connecting tube 27 tapped in at 23 to the sewer pipe 30 into which the toilet hopper 11 may be flushed in the usual manner.
Obviously, any conventional manner may be used for supplying water to flush the toilet hopper, either the conventional water box 31 as shown, or any other conventional manner of supplying water to the toilet hopper.
Hinged on the top of the rear 14 of the toilet hopper 11 in the usual manner are a toilet seat ring 32 and a toilet seat cover 33 both constituting essential elements of this invention.
On the toilet seat ring 32, a forwardly extending lip 34 is provided at the rear of the toilet seat ring opening, and a similar rearwardly extending lip 35 is provided at the forward portion of the toilet seat ring 32, these lips 34 and 35 being intended to cooperate with the body of the user so as to reduce the opening through which the toilet gases might escape while in use. Secured to the bottom of the toilet seat ring 32 and extending about the rear portion thereof, about both sides, and forwardly to the forward portion thereof and terminating in spaced apart ends 36 is a yiedable sealing member 37 preferably of soft yieldable rubber, or other similar yieldable or plastic material, which when the toilet seat is down, and is supported on the rim of the hopper 11, provides an air entrance opening through which air may enter beneath the toilet seat and the user into the hopper to draw the toilet gases through the connterbore opening 12, and through the connecting nipples to the vent 23 and out through the mesh cap 25 to the atmosphere.
The cover 33 is provided on the lower side thereof with a yieldable sealing member 38 of similar material to the yieldable sealing member 37 of the toilet ring seat 32, this yieldable sealing member 38 extending completely about the underside of the toilet seat cover 33 in such a location thereon that when the toilet seat 33 is placed down on the toilet seat ring 32, the yieldable sealing member 38 will contact with the top of the toilet seat ring 32, and provide a firm seal against the escape of any gases between the toilet seat ring 32 and this toilet seat cover 33.
As a result, when the toilet is not in use, air can only reach the toilet hopper between the ends 36 of the seal- 'i'ng meirrber37 on thebottom of the toilet seat ring 32, and thus, pass therethreugh-and be vented-through the counterbore 12 to the vent pipe 231. When the toilet hopper is flushed in the usual manner, the water carrying the contents of the bowl often gurgles asit' passes into the sewer pipe, but with this inventiondueto the presence of the ta 'ZSthrough' the vent "26 and thus to the-'vent-pipe-2-3 and atmosphere through the mesh cap '25, i this 1 conventional gurgling "is reduced or eliminated.

While the device has beenshown -and the structure described in-detail, it is "obvious that this invention is notto'be considered-as being li'mited to theeXaet form disclosedQand' that changes iii-detail and construction -may be made therein within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of'this invention.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of this invention,-what is claimed is:
A ventilating toilet comprisinga' toilet hopper, a ring to the front thereof but having its front ends spaced apart -to-provide-a- -small--air--entrance --whenthe--seatis down on the rim of the toilet hopper, said lips being adapted to seal the upper surface of said seat against the body of the user thereof to thereby limit the admission of air to said small air entrance, 3. seat closure cover hinged at the rear of said toilet hopper to overlie said toilet seat ring, a s'econd yieldable annular sponge rubber sealingniember secured on the underside of said closure'co've'r and"extending fully thereabout, and means for'venting-air-entering from-said air entrance and toilet gases from the rear of said toilet hopper.
