Description

July 25,1950 H. MiTToN 4 2,516,476
vEN'rILAToR sYs'rm FOR WATER cLosETs Filed .my 14, 1947 Patented July 25, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VENTILATOR SYSTEM FOR WATER CLOSETS Harold Mitten, Drummond, Mont. i Application July 14, 1947, Serial No. 760,855
4 Claims. 1 i
The present invention refers to water closet construction and more particularly to the ventilation thereof. The main object of my invention is to prevent odors from the vcloset entering the room but to lead them instead directly from the closet out into the atmosphere.
This improvement can be applied, not only to new closets, but also to closets already installed and of almost any type provided with a hinged seat and a lid.
One embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the drawing, wherein Figure l is a front elevation of a water closet with both the seat and the lid in raised position;
Figure 2 is a side elevation as seen from the right side of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on a plane along line 3 3 of Figure l;
Figure 4 is a transverse section on a plane along line 4 4 of Figure 1 showing one manner of securing the gasket under the seat;
Figure 5 is a modification of Fig-ure 4 showing the gasket carried in a groove under the seat;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a ap for partly covering the vent leading into the ventilator box;
Figure '7 is a section similar to Figure 3 of a modiiied construction of the ventilator box.
Like numerals denote the same details in the different figures.
In the drawing numeral I denotes the porcelain bowl of an ordinary water closet, provided with a seat II open in the middle and a lid I2 as usual.
The seat II is hinged as at I4 on a rod I5 which is carried between two standards or hinge bolts I6 secured on top of the porcelain bowl I0. The hinge arm I4 is preferably L-shaped bent down and attached on the rear edge of the seat I I, see Fig. 3.
Another pair of hinges II on rod I placed on either side of hinges I4 are secured on the rear edge of the lid I2. The hinge rod I5 is preferably threaded in the heads I8 of the hinge bolts I6 in order to facilitate adjustment and assembling.
At 20 is shown the usual flushing tank with inlet 2| to the bowl I6 and at 22 is shown the Ventilating pipe for the bowl leading out from one side of the Ventilating box 23, which is shown as made of metal and set on top of the bowl I0 in Figure 3, but is shown at 23a, Figure 7, as a modification and built into the bowl I6. The Ventilating box 23 has a vent opening 24 in front, which however is normally covered by an angular iiap 25 provided with ngers or hooks 26 at the top for engaging under the top edge of the vent opening 24. This flap rests with its angular flange 2l on the bottom edge of the vent opening 24. It will be understood that the ap 25, the function of which is to prevent ushing water to enter the vent box 23, does not completely cover the vent opening 24, because of the triangular openings formed on each side thereof and which permits air passing thru at any time. This flap 25 can be easily removed or lifted off for repairs or for cleaning the box 23.
A cavity 30 is shown on the underside of the seat I I at its rear end for passing odors on from the bowl I6 into the box 23 and out -thru the ventilator pipe 22.
On the underside of the seat II and practically all around the middle opening 3| thereof is secured a gasket 32 of rubber or other flexible packing material. In Figure 4 this gasket is shown as being pressed in between the side anges 33 of a channel 34, which is secured by screws 35 or the like.
In Figure 5 a modification is shown of carrying the gasket 32 which in that case is done by a taper sided groove 36 out into the underside of the seat II and surrounding the seat opening 3|. The gasket 32 is squeezed into said groove 36 and held in place by the expansion of the gasket.
When the lid is closed, the gasket 32 forms an airtight closure circumscribing with the top surface of the bowl IIJ. Air impregnated with odors from the bowl will therefore pass out thru the cavity 30 and the side openings of the flap 25 into the ventilator box 23 and from there out into the atmosphere by means of the pipe 22. No odors will therefore escape into the room, since the gasket 32 will prevent their passage except thru the ventilator box 23, whether the construction shown in Figures 3 and 4 or in Figures 5 and 7 is used.
It is to be understood that the invention as herein ldisclosed may be Varied from the details described and shown without departure from the spirit of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. A ventilator system for water closets provided with a bowl with a seat having a middle opening and a lid therefor; comprising a ventilator box with a vent in front and an outlet into the atmosphere, said box being located back of said seat at the top of said bowl, a ap over said vent having side openings forming communication between the bowl and the ventilator box,
and means for closing other outlets from said bowl.
2. A ventilator system for water closets provided with a bowl With a seat having a middle opening and a lid therefor; comprising a ventilator box with a Vent in front and an outlet into the atmosphere, said box being located back of said seat at the top of said bowl, a flap over said vent having side openings forming communication between'thebbwll and the ventilator'box, and means forA closing-j ot'herv'outlets fromsai'd lbowl, said flap being hooked for easy removal in said vent.
3. A ventilator system for waterl-clesetslprovided with a bowl with a seat having a middle opening and a lid therefor; comprisingla-.ventilator box positioned at the backMofsaid-.Seatand at the top of said bowl, said box'having an outlet into the atmosphere and an inlet opening directed forwardly across the underside of the seat, the inlet A.-opening.having ,a bordering `depen-ding top ange, and ,.a ,deflector ,member .having connected upper` and lower. ,portions andfpositioned in front oj....,the. forwardly directed .opening Aof `the box, the=120p-edge.ofthe.upper,portionofzsaidfdeector being detachably engaged behind said flange to removably maintain the defiector in position.
4. A ventilator system of the character stated in claim 3, wherein said deflector has the bottom portion dat and resting along one edge against the bottom of the box in the forwardly directed opening, the upper portion being positioned at its lower edge a substantial distance forwardly of the last mentioned opening and extending upwardly and-:rearwardly towardfsa'd flange and thersaid means-connectingthewupper portion with the ange comprising a, pair of fingers pro- 4fleeting upwardly behind the flange.
