Description

l. H. SWIFT. BAND FOR ENGAGING AND HOLDING THE ENDS OF THE RIBS 0F UMBRELLAS WHEN CLOSED.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-3. 1921- "Patented Aug. 15, 1922.
[NI EN Z013 JAY H. SWIFT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BAND non ENGAGING AND HOLDING THE ENDS on THE RIBS or CLOSED.
'UMBRELLAS WHEN I 3 Patented u 15, 1922.
Application filed August 3, 1921. Serial No. 489,629.
T 0 all whom it may concern v Be it known thatI, JAY H. SWIFT, a citi- I zen of the United States, residing at 734 Shirley Street, Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Band for Engaging and Holding the Ends of Ribs of Umbrellas When Closed, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention consists of an appliance which I preferably make of a strip of flat spring steel wound fast on a mandril, to form a fiat band of one or two turns.
The object of my invention is so to make and construct a band that can be applied to the handle of any umbrella, and to adjust itself automatically to any sized handle,
which will clasp the handle and remain in that position when the umbrella is raised. I also wish to make a band that can be adjusted and operated by any one using it.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 illustrates the band on the handle 7 v I apart, and lylng in the same plane, the outer Fi .3 illustrates the band when disengage from umbrella.
A shows construction of the band.
coil.
C shows the free outside of the flat coil, with end turned out, inorder that it can slide freely over rod of umbrella.
The ends must be free to allow the band to pass over the rod ofumbrell'a.
. The object of my invention is not to hold umbrella in a tight roll, but to hold the ends of ribs together. I I
The way my invention is to be operated is as follows:
The band is passed over the rod of umbrella, and pushedup over the handle; the tension of the springin the steel holds it on the handle. To engage the ends of the ribs, push the band down over them, and when the umbrella is to be opened, push the hand back on the handle. I l
I claimv As an article of manufacture, a band adapted to hold the. ribs of an umbrella when closed, comprising a narrow elongated band of resilient material formed in a coil, the turns of the coil being spaced terminal of the coil being flared outwardly.
