Description

`.'T. EAHLE.
' fore been granted to me.
NrrED STATns OSCAR T. EARLE, OF NORWALK, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT lN HAND-LEVER ATTACHMENTS FOR STEAMPUNIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,562, dated September 9, 1873; application filed March 3, 1873.
struction and arrangement of the detachable hand-lever attachments used in direct-acting Asteam-pumps, for the purpose of operating such pumps by hand in the absence of steam or other motive power usually employed for operating such pumps, and is especially designed to be employed in connection with the steam-pump of this class, for which Letters Patent of the United States have hereto- My invention consists in arranging the hand-lever which works the tappet-arm or piston-rod in a horizontal position, so that a number of persons may be able to work them at the same time.
In the hand-lever attachments heretofore used, the levers have always been placed in a y,
also, in the cases of such pumps with perpendicular hand-lever attachments, that it is in i most cases necessary to erect platforms'over the pumps, in order that the operative may reach such levers, which is not only an expensive, but an exceedingly clumsy and inconvenient arrangement.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a view looking down upon the steam-pump, and showing three different ways in which the levers may be applied. 1
A, B, and C represent the levers, extending horizontally across the piston-rod and bed of the pump and engine, the levers AB embracing the tappet-arm D by means of a yoke or open slot in the end, as in A, or near the center, as in B, the lever C passing through a horizontal slot in the. tappet-arm E, and all having fulcrums on a brace or support, F, extending from either side of the pump between the two cylinders. In each case the lever is attached at its fulcrum by means of a removable pin, or otherwise, in such a manner that it may be readily detached.
It will be seen that the lever, as arranged, may be readily reached in each case without the'employment of platforms, and that any number of men may work upon them at the same time, the number being only limited by the length of the levers.
What I claim is- The combination of the detachable handlever for direct-acting steam-pumps, arranged horizontally between the two cylinders, and
the tappet-arm, substantially as described.
