Description
P. WEST & a. s. LEE.
Boots.
Patented September 2,187 3 UNITED STATES PATENI FFIGE.
PRESBURY WEST AND GEORGE S. LEE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.142A24, dated September 2, 1873; application filed June 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PRESBURY EST and our improved boot, and Fig. 2 represents a cross-section through one of the side seams.
To enable those skilled in the art to which our invention belongs to make and use the same, we will describe it in detail.
The nature of our invention consists in a high-legged boot, the side seams of which are closed upon the outside of the leg, the parts being held together by means of metal fastenings, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, the parts marked A and B represent the front and back parts of the leg, said parts being united by means of side scams 0, and which seams are closed upon the outside of the boot-leg, and are formed by means of metal fastenings a, which in this instance are provided with heads I), their points being passed through the edges of the leather and riveted down, as shown at d, after collars e have been placed upon their ends.
When
the side seams are formed, as described, the outer edges of the leather can be shaved off or rubbed down, so as to leave a neat rounded ridge only, and by inserting the metal fastenings with their heads upon the front sides of the seams a very neat appearance is produced,
while at the same time strong and durable seams are obtained.
By our present invention the advantages of an outside sea-m are obtained, while at the same time the expense of a covering stay or brace, necessary to protect the stitches when thread is used to sidethe boot, is obviated, and those skilled in the art to which our invention belongs will readily appreciate the practical value and merits of the same.
Having described our improvements in boots, what we claim therein as new and of our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improved article of manufacture, 1s-
A boot the side seams of which are closed upon the outer side, and formed by means of metal fastenin gs, substantially as shown and described.
