FREIGHT-CAR LOCK.
Application filed May 20, 1920'.
and which will not interfere with the sliding bar-k of the door when it'is desired to open it. Experience has shown that in the past when freight car doors were locl red and sealed only at one side, it was possible for thieves to wedge the back edge of the door away from the side of the car without d1sturbing the lock and thus gain access to the freight within the car, and my invention obviates that possibility. Y My lock may be made of steel, iron or any other suitable inaterial which will be strong enough to make the lock secure. i
My invention is illustrated more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the freight car door, in the closed position on the car;
Figure 2 is a section along the line 22 of Figure 1.;
Figure 8 is a. front elevation of the lock;
Figure 4: is a section along the line l4l of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a section along the line 5-5 of Figure 3;
Like parts are indicated by like charactors in all the drawings.
A is a sliding freight car door having the lock plate A at the back edge thereof. The look A is fastened to the door at one end by means of a bolt A which projects far enough out from the door frame to allow the lock to swing down when the car door is opened. The bolt is tightened in position on the door frame by means of a nut A and the shoulder A resting on the washer A allows the head end of the bolt to project sufficiently to permit the lock to swing down when the door is opened as above referred to. The lock is fastened at its other end to the car body by means of a bolt A which has an eye shaped head A The bolt eye is located in a recess in the car wall. and the bolt is held in position by a specification of Letters Patent.

nut and washer. The look plate A is slotted as at A to engage the eyerU'and is so shaped that it has a plurality of perpendicular parts, one parallel the car door the hex perpendicular thereto, a third parallel with and adapted to rest against the car wall and the next perpendicularto it and adapted to penetrate the recess, and the last, the slotted part parallel the first and adapted to pass over the bolt eye.
C is the usual form of hasp fastened at one end to the car door by means of the staple C, and slotted at the other end in the usual manner to engage the staple C The hasp is held in place on the staple by the pin 9*. v
.ihe use and operation of my lnvention are follows:
The lock plate is permanently attached .to the car door by a bolt which is allowed to project sufficiently to leave play for the lock plate to swing down perpendicularly on the door when not in use. When the door is closed and it is desired to lock it more securely than, and in addition to the ordinary hasp and. staple lock on the forward portion of the door, my lock plate is swung up to a horizontal position, the slot slipped over the eye bolt, and locked in position by a quarter turn of the eye bolt. This bolt is sunk into a groove in the car frame just deep enough to permit the top of the bolt to come flush with the outer surface of the car frame and thus does not interfere with the opening of the sliding door.- The pin is then slipped through the eye of the bolt and the seal is attached to the lower position of the pin. This makes it impossible to wedge open either side of the car door without breaking the seals on the locks.
I claim:
1. A look plate for freight car doors consisting of a unitary plate comprising a' plurality of perpendicular sections at right angles with each other and adapted to engage the several surfaces of the freight car door and the car body, one part of the lock plate slotted and adapted to penetrate a recess in the car body.
2. A look plate for freight car doors consisting of a plurality of perpendicular sections at right angles with each other and adapted to engage the several surfaces of the freight car door and the car body one part of the lock plate slotted and adapted to penetrate a recess in the car body, an eye bolt therein adapted to engage the slot in the lock plate.
3. A lock plate for freight car doors consisting of a plurality of perpendicular sections at right angles With each other and gage the front surface of a freight car door,
thenext the back edge of the door, the next the front surface of the car body adjacent it,
and the last tWo adapted to penetrate a recess inithe car Wall.
5. A unitary lock plate comprising five right angled parts the first adapted to engage the front surface of a freight car door, the next the back edge of the door, the next the front surface of the car body adjacent it, and the last two adapted to penetrate a recess in the car Wall, the fifth part of the lock plate being slotted to engage an eye of a bolt in the recess of the car body.
6. A lock plate comprising five right angled parts the first adaptedto engage the front surface of a freight car door, the next the backedge of the door, the next the front surface of the car body adjacent it, and the last two adapted to penetrate a recess in the car Wall, the fifthpart of the lock plate being slotted to engage .an eye of a bolt in the recess of the car body said bolt eye being adapted to turn to secure the lock plate firmly upon the door and car Wall.
7. A lock plate comprising five right angled parts the first adapted to engage the front surface of a freight car door, the next the back edge of the door, the next the front surface of the car body adjacent it, andthe last two adapted to penetrate a recess in the car Wall, the fifth part of the'lock plate being slotted to engage an eye of a bolt in the.
recess of the car body, said bolt eye being adapted to turn to secure the lock plate firmly upon the door and car Wall, a pin.
adapted to penetrate the eye of the bolt and to be sealed at its lower end. 1
8. A lock plate for a freight car door consisting of a unitary plate comprising a plurality of sections at angles to each other and adapted to engage the several surfaces of the freight car door and the car body, one part of the lock plate slotted and adapted to penetrate a recess in the car body; I p
