FRANKLIN B. PEASE, OF ONTARIO CENTRE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN AUGER-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,410, dated Sepfember 2, 1873; application filed June 25, 1873.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN B. PEAsE, of Ontario Centre, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Auger-Handles, of which the the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to provide a clamping auger-handle, which shall secure a full bearing, laterally, of at least one side ot' the shank of any ordinary auger as they are prepared and sent into the market by the man-i ufacturers, Without requiring to be fitted before usin g. In consists, essentially, in the arrangement ot the openings for the receptionl of the auger-shank diagonally through the opposite sides ot' the cylinder, which, in connection with the circular-faced clamp, shall force the shank rmly against at least one oi' the flat sides of the openings, Whether `the said shank is made perfectly square or not.
Figure lis a sectional view of my improved handle on the line s a', Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
C is the central cylindrical portion, which is provided with the handle-socket A. The opposite end is threaded to `receive the other handle-socket, B. This socket has a clamping-plate pivoted centrally. This plate a is prevented from turning With'the handle`socket B by means of the ways n upon the opposite sides internally ot' the cylinder C 5 it is thereby` retained in a proper position at all times to receive and clamp the shank of the auger. The
. shape ofthe clamping-face otl this plate is circular, as shown in Fig. 2, the light dotted lines indicating its outline. Section G is also provided with a rectangular opening, 1^,in the upper and lower side, asshown, to receive th auger-shank. v -Y It will beseen that, by arranging these square shank-receiving openings diagonally, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2, when the clamping-plate a. is forced against the augershank, by screwing inthe handle-socket B, the shank is forced into the angle i of the openings r, and that point being eccentric or ont of line with the axis of the plate a, the shank Vis. pressed iirmly against that side of the openings from t' toward c, and the circular face f the clamp rigidly clasps the two opposite corners of the shank s, Fig. 2.
The clamp being somewhat loosely pivoted in the handle-socket, it is permitted more readily to adjust and adapt itselt to the position and shape of the shank. V
By this construction of the parts the handles H and El are left solid, and, therefore, possess full strength where they enter the sockets A andB.
What I claim as my invention is v The Vcombination of the square shankre ceiving openings in the cylinder with the circular-faced clamp a, substantially in the manner and for the purposes shown and described.
FRANKLIN B. PEASE.
