Specication of Letters Patent. i Patented July 25:, 1922.
application aiefi'octpber 18.1921. semaine. 508,554.
Be it known that we, li l. sin; Vihlllrniisoiv and ANDREW E. lViLnsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at `Grand Rapids, in
have invented certain new and useful lim prove-ments in Powder Puffs, of which the following is a specification. A,
Our invention relates to improvements in powder puffs for use as a toilet article upon the face and neck of ladies, and its objects are: first, to provide a powder puff that may be used both for distributing and blending powder and rouge upon the face from the same puff second, to provide a powder puff that may be made to so protect the powder and rouge as to keep it practically ant-iseptic and free from dust and foreign matter. when not in actual use for toilet purposes; third, to provide a means whereby vthe powder and rouge will be conlined, when the pu' isbeing carried, so as to avert all danger of smearing other articles that may be in a` hand bag, or other place, with the puff, and, fourth, to provide a powder pull with which only the surface containing the powder that it is desired to place upon the cheek or neck of the user need be exposed while using the puff, the other wings of the puff being locked securely together.
We attain these objects b-y the construction and arrangements of parts shown in the companying drawing, in which Fig. l is-a plan of the puff closed position for storing and carrying without danger of smearing other articles with the powders. Fig. 2 is a. perspective of the puff showing one side open ready for placin the powder upon the cheek. Fig. 3 shows t e puff closed and the several wings securely fastened vtogether at the edges. A Fig. 4 is an edge view of the powder carrying elements showing how they.
Y elements, as follows: F irst, we have vthe.
moisture proof covering indicated at 1 in Fig. l, which is placed outside of, or over the soft, luy powder carrying element 5.
This `powder carrying element is made fromkr `a very soft velvet, plush, or cotton flannel of such a texture that the folded surfaces, as at 2a maybe Stitched @Ofgther form the folds the county yof Kent and State of Michigan,
surface. In other words, so that when they surfaces 5 are exposed there will be no inipression of a seam at the line of stitching, and no obstruction to the free use of the powder upon the surface at 5.
en in use we open but one pair of wings, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 5, the other pair of wings being appropriated as a handle'or hand hold with which to manipulate the puff when powdering the cheeks, &c. When not in use the wings are folded together, as in Figs. 3 and. 4, and as indicated in Fig. l, and may be securely connected at the edges by the use of straps 3 stitched to one pair of wings, as at 3', and the other end temporarily secured to the other wing by means Vof the clasps 4, Ll, or other available means, so as to absolutely confine the powder and avert the danger of the powdered surfaces becoming contaminated with any form o-f foreign matter.
1When preparing to use this puff one or the other of the straps 3 is disconnected from the opposite wing and the wings are swung lines in Fig. 3. f. the upper wings are opened the part 6 willfbe appropriated as a l handle, and if the lower wings are swung open, the upper wings,- as l, will be utilized for the purpose, the opening and closing of said wings are indicated bythe positions of the arrows in Figs. 3 and 5. It will beunderstood that with this puff. it will be necessary for a lady to carry but one puff for two colors of powder, and when the puff is not in use there need be no possibility of the powder becoming contaminated or unsanitary, or rendering other articlesv dusty and unsanitary or unsightly from contact with Vthe powder on the puf.
- Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new in the ait,is:
1. In a powder puff, two pieces offab-ric each having one plain surface andone fluffy surface, ea-ch of said pieces of fabric centrally folded with the plain surfaces outward and the folded edges stitched together in such' a manner that the puff may be folded with both pairs of fluffy surfaces contacting and protected, or may be opened so one pair of said' surfaces may be exposed and made to form a fluffy surface for' the storage and application of powder.
2. In combination With the elements covered in claim l, a moisture proof covering placed over the `outei1 surfaces of the ufl'jyv n material. t i
fluffy surfaces contacting.
4. In combination `with the ered in claim 1, securing vmeans attached to elements cov` i the edges of the pu in positions to securely connect the pairs of fabric in place with the fluffy 'surfaces in contact.
5. In combination with the elements covered n claim 1, a strap secured to each of two Wings, and a button upon each of the two opposite Wings arranged to securely fasten the free edges of said pairs of Wings together. f l
`Signed at Grandi Rapids, Michigan, October 8, 1921.
