Description

P. F. AUGENBRAUN. PIN TUMBLER LOCK. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 2, I92I Patented July 11, 1922.
V gwuem io o BRAUN, a citizen of the United States, and
s rrss PETER F. AUG-ENBR AUN, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE 6; TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
PIN-TUMBLER LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1922.
1 0 all whom it may concern :1
Be it known that 1, PETER F. AUGEN- a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin-Tumbler Locks; and I do hereby dc clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which. it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pin tumbler locks and more particularly to means for protecting the tumblers and drivers of the same,--the object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient armors for the front portions of the cylinder and lug to prevent access to the tumblers and heir drivers by a boring tool inserted at the front of the lock.
l/Vith this object in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 plug 2,-the former being provided with bores 3 to receive spring pressed drivers and the plug having bores 4 to receive pin tumblers. V
A hardened steel cap 5 is located on the front end of the cylinder and forms in effect a face plate for the latter as well as an armor. The cap or armor 5 is provided on its rear side with'lugs 6 which are not bardened. The lugs 6 are formedwith bores 7 by drilling and they enter sockets 8 having shoulders 9, in the end of the cylinder shell. After having been inserted in the sockets 8, these lugs are expanded at their rear ends with a suitabletool so as to overlie the shoulders 9 and thus the cap or armor is securely fastened by inaccessible fastening means.
The cap or armor 5 is made with an opening 10 in line with the plug and the cylinder which enters this opening. The front end of the plug 2 enters the opening 10 in the cap or armor 5 and is provided with a flange 12 which overlies the flange 11 on the cylinder shell. The front end of the plug 2 is disposed rearwardly of the plane of the front face of the cap or armor 5 and is provided with a hardened steel armor 13 having an annular flange 14 encircling the flanged portion l2 of the plug within the opening l0 of the cap or armor 5, and said armor plate 13 lies flush with the outer face of said cap or armor 5. a
it is apparent that with my improvements, it will be impossible to injure the pin tumblers or their drivers with the use of a .tool applied to the front end of the lock.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with a lock cylinder socketed at its end, of a hardened steel armor on the end of said cylinder and having means entering the socket portion of the latter, and securing means for said last mentioned means.
2. The combination with a lock cylinder having sockets in its end, of an armor cap on the end of the cylinder and provided with projections entering said sockets and rigidly connected with the cylinder.
3. The combination with a lock cylinder having sockets in its end, of an armor cap on the end of said cylinder and provided with projections entering the sockets in the cylinder. and means whereby said projections are secured in the sockets.
4. In a pin tumbler clock, the combination with a cylinder shell, of a hardened steel cap or armor on the front end thereof, and inaccessible fastening means projecting from said cap or armor and into the cylinder and rigidly securing said cap or armor to the cylinder shell.
5. In a pin tumbler lock, the combination with a cylinder shell having sockets, of a hardened steel cap or armor on the front end of said cylinder shell, said cap or armor having unhardened hollow lugs expanded at their rear ends within said sockets.
6. In a pin tumbler lock, the combination of a cylinder shell, a hardened steel cap or Minor on the front end of said shell and In testimony whereof, I have signed this having an opening, a plug in the shell and specification in the presence ef two subseribentering the opening in the cz'ip or armor, ing Witnesses.
and a hardened steel armor applied to the PETER F. AUGENBRAUN.
front end of said lug and provided With 'a "VVitne'sses:
flange embracingthe front end of the plug CHAS. A. BERRY, wlthin the opening in the cap or armor, CHAS. LEDIN.
