Application filed April 3, 1920.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HERMAN N. MATZEN, a citizen of the United States residing at Cleveland Heights, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to pipes and has for its general object to produce a pipe which will be and remain dry in use and which nevertheless is capable of easy clean- One of the greatest objections to ordinary pipes is the flooding of the mouth of the smoker with liquid containing nicotine and an infusion of the tobacco within the bowl of the pipe. This flooding is due to the fact that in the ordinary pipe, saliva from the mouth of the smoker enters the bowl, at least during some of the positions of the pipe, and in a subsequent position of the pipe enters the mouth. To prevent this action, various forms of traps have been introduced between the mouth-piece and the bowl; but these traps render the cleaning of the smoke passage ditlicult and materially increase the cost of the pipe.
By my invention, a continuous smoke duct extends from the mouthpiece to the bowl, making the cleaning operation simple, and this duct extends upwardly from the mouthpiece to the bowl in all ordinary positions of the head of the smoker. Thus no moisture from the mouth can enter the bowl or even the smoke passage in the stem; and the pipe will always be dry and its passage may be cleaned from time to time by the use of the ordinary cleaning wire or implement. M In thedrawings forming part hereof, Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of a pipe constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 a central lon itudinal sectional view of the same illustrating the position in which the pipe is supported in the mouth of a smoker; Fig. 3 a plan view of the pipe; and Fig. 4 a sectional view corresponding to the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Describing the parts by reference characters, 1 denotes the bowl of the pipe, the
said bowl having a stem projection 2 provided with a threaded recess 3 for the threaded projection 4 on the stem 5. The mouthpiece 6 and the portion of the stem adjacent thereto are widened transversely,

and wide upwardly and downwardly pro et-ting shoulders 'i' and 8 are interposed between the body of the stern and the mouthpiece, the shoulder 8 being slightly in advance of the shoulder 7, that is, being interposed between the shoulder 7 and the bowl.
The stem 5 extends downwardly from the connection 4 to the mouthpiece, and a con tinuous smoke duct extends downwardlv from the bowl-and said connection to the mouthpiece in all ordinary positions of the pipe when in use.
With the normal arrangement of upper and lower teeth, the inner surfaces or edges of the upper teeth of the smoker will natu rally and readily engage the shoulder 7 and the outer surfaces or edges of the lower teeth will naturally and readily engage the face 8 of the shoulder 8. This enables the smoker naturally to hold the pipe with the duct 9 extending upwardly toward the bowl. As the head is inclined downwardly the natural tendency of the smoker is to close the teeth more firmly on the stem at the same time thrusting forwardly with the lower jaw. This results in tilting the pipe upwardly to compensate for the downward inclination of the head. In fact, because of this natural tendency of the smoker to thrust the lower jaw forwardly when the head is inclined downwardly, I have found it to be unnecessary to provide all pipes with the shoulder 8, the lower teeth sliding forwardly on the bottom of the mouthpiece as the head is thus inclined and the action of the upper and lower teeth tilting the pipe upwardly so that the smoke passage 9 will always extend upwardly to the bowl.
'The shoulders 7 and 8 are made of considerable width, as shown, so as to permit each to be engaged by at least two teeth of the smoker. The position of the shoulder 8 may be varied with respect to the delivery end of the passage 9 to accommodate variations in theset of the lower jaws of difierent smokers. Because of the continuity of the smoke passage 9 it may be cleaned as occasion may demand by any of the ordinary flexible cleaners.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A pipe comprising a bowl, a stem and a mouthpiece having a continuous smoke passageway extending upwardly from the mouthpiece to the bowl, and means on said mouthpiece arranged to be engaged natu 1 0 shoulder shoulder whereby the upper teeth of a smoker will hook against the front of the upper shoulder and the lower teeth will naturally bear against the rear of the lower shoulder to cause the pipe bowl to be elevated naturally by the closing of the teeth against said mouthpiece.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature.
