LATCHING HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
iPaten ted June 27, 1922.
Application filed August 10, 1921. Serial no, 491,209,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DECATUR W. DAvrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville in the county of Jefferson and State of rientucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latching Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings.
This invention relates to looks and latches, and particularly to that variety of latch wherein a hasp or like member having a hook at one end is pivotally mounted and at its other end the hook-shaped member is adapted to engage with a staple.
The general object of my invention is to form the latching hook of this character so that it may be readily locked to the staple by the use of a padlock, thus permitting the latch to be used in the ordinary manner or as a hasp.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of a door and its jamb showing my improved latching device applied;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal section through the door and amb showing the latching device in top plan view;
Figure 8 is a perspective of the angular end of the hasp.
Referring to these drawings, it will be seen thatmy device consists of a latching member 10 which is illustrated as a rod of metal square in cross section and twisted intermediate its ends, though this is immaterial, the rear end of this latching member 10 being formed to provide an eye 11. The opposite end of the latching member is formed to provide a downwardly extending bill 12. The .ye 11 is engaged with a staple 13 and the bill 12 is adapted to engage a staple 14-, one of these staples being mounted upon the door frame and the other upon the door. So far, I have described a construction which is common, and my improvement consists in forming at the free end of the member 10 a horizontally diposed eye 15 which is adapted to register with the staple 14: when the bill 12 is engaged with the staple and through which a shank or padlock 16 may be passed. Preferably in order to form this eye the rod from which the member 10 is formed is curved in a circle horizontallv and then the extremity of the rod is extended downward, Thus the combined latch and hasp may be readily and cheaply made and the rod retains its full strength.
It will be obvious that the device may be either used as an ordinary hook, latch 01 as a hasp for locking the door.
I claim l. A latching device of the character described comprising a member swingingly mounted at one end and having its opposite end formed with an eye and a downwardlv extending bill, the eye being disposed at right angles to the length of the bill and a fixed member through which the bill is adapted to extend and with which the eye registers, whereby a padlock may be disposed through the eye and the fixed member.
QM A latch of the character described comprising a swingingly mounted member having at one end a downwardly extending bill and formed to provide a horizontally disposed eye above the bill, a staple through which the bill is adapted to be disposed, said eye registering with the staple, and a lock having a shank disposed through the eye and staple.
8. A latching device of the character described comprising a staple, a rod having an eye swingingly engaged with said staple,
the opposite end of the rod being bent in a circle to form an eye and then extended to form a bill at right angles to the rod, a second staple through which said bill is adapted to be disposed and with which said eye is adapted to register, and a padlock having a shank adapted to pass through the second named staple and said eye.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature.
DECATUR W. DAVIS.
