UNITED STATES DANIEL M. DONEEIOO, OF BEAVER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.'
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,256, dated June 24, 1873 application filed June 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL M. l? oNEHoo, of Beaver Court-House, in the county of Beaver and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Stop and Look; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the construction and arrangement of a sash stop and lock; and it consists in furnishing a cam-surface to the pivoted fastener heretofore patented to me, so that it has a wedging action to hold the window firmly at the top when raised, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front View of my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged inside view of the lock-case.
A represents a part of the window-frame, to which is secured a rack-bar, B. If this rackbar is for the upper sash a recess, a, is made in the frame at the upper end of the rack-bar; but if it is for the lower sash the recess a is formed at the lower end of the rackbar. From the lower end of said rack-bar projects downward a hook, I at the mouth of the latter recess, which is marked a. In the sash E is made a recess to receive a lock-case, O, within which is pivoted the latch D.
This latch is constructed in the form shown in Fig. 2, and is an improvement upon the one shown and described in my patent for sash stop and lock, dated April 13, 1869, No. 88,855.
It is pivoted at e, and the preponderance of its weight being on the inner side of the pivot the tendency is to throw the arm at on the outer side outward and upward. This arm has a hook, 6, formed on each side, and the outer edge, from a; to y, increases in distance from the pivot. The object of this form is to make the latch constitute awedge-shaped cam to lock and hold the upper sash perfectly tight.
In almost all sash-locks the upper sash will drop down more or less, and will not be per .For locking the lower sash the hook t on the upper side of the arm at will catch on the projecting hook b immediately upon entering the recess a, and hence the sash will be locked, even if the arm only enters the said recess a very trifiin g distance. For ordinary windowsashthe weight of the inner end of the latch is sufficient to insure the proper working of the same; but 011 car-windows, where there is a constant jarring, a spring, h, is added, as shown in Fig. 2, to operate, in connection with the weight of the latch, to throw and hold the latch-arni d outward. The latch is provided with a small knob, m, projecting through a' which it was bound, and does not continue to bind till the entire latch is withdrawn, thus making it very easy of operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The latch D constructed as described, with arm (I having hooks t t, and a wedgeshaped cam-surface, 00 y, and operating with or without a spring h, in connection with a rack'bar, B, and recess a or a, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of June, 1873.
D. M. DONEHOO.
