HATPIN.
Application filedJ'une 8, 1921. Serial No. 475,999.
To all wkomc't may concern.-
Be it known that I, Crmnnns BOUGH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Long Beach, in the county of Los Zngeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hatpins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a hat pin and has for its primary object the provision of an improved hat pin of the form'disclosed in my Patent No. 1,370,559, and which may be readily attached to a hat of conventional form without injury thereto.
The invention has for another object the provision of a hat pin of the character stated which will be constructed in such a manner that the stem of the pin may revolve through the crown of the hat'and the coil of the pin with the pointed free end thereof may work through a guard and shield plate secured to the inner face of the crown of the hat, whereby practically all of the coil of the pin may be withdrawn to position back of the guard and shield plate when it is desired to withdraw the pin from the wearers hair and remove the hat, thereby reducing to the minimum liability of the pin being caught in the wearers hair and causing the hair to be deranged. v
The invention has for another object the provision of a hat pin of the character stated which will be of extremely simple and inexpensive construction as well as highly eflicient in use and which may be applied to the various types of ladieshats without alteration thereof or injury to the hat.
The invention has for a further object the provision of a hat pin of thelcharacter stated in which the guard andshjeld plate may be composed of any suitablerlmaterial and will be provided with guide, openings and lugs for the coil .of-the hat pin as well as a stop lug to limit movement of the pin in one direction, so that the point of the pin will not be drawn back of the shield or guard plate.
E. RoM- The invention has for a still further object the provision of a-hat pin of the character stated which may be readily operated to either securethe hat in position or permit' removal of the same fromthe wearers head, as desired, by proper manipulation of a knob or other pin head located exteriorly of the hat.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of cooperating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming a part of the present application and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view of a hat with my invention applied thereto,
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view illustrating the pin in an operative position,
Figure 3 is a sidefelevation illustrating the device,
Figure 4: is a top plan'view, illustrating a modified form of my invention and show ing the pin partly in dotted lines,
Figure 5 is a sideelevation illustrating the same,
Figure 6 is a detail viewv illustrating a combined stop and pivot tongue for the pin.
Referring more in detail to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the stem of the hat pin which is extended through a suitable opening 2, preferably formed centrally in the crown of the hat as shown in the drawings. A knob or pin head 3 is mounted on the outer or upper extremity of the stem'l and the hat pin may be readily operated by proper manipulation of the knob or pin head 8, as will be readily understood as" the description proceeds. The material from which the pin is formed is extended at a right angle, as shown at 4 from the inner end of the stem 1 and the material is then curved to form the coil or hook 5 of the hat pin with the pointed free end 6, as clearly shown in the drawings.
The shield or guard plate 7 constructed of celluloid, tin or any other suitable material is secured to the inner face of the hat crown around the opening 2, by stitching along the edge of the shield or guard plate 7 and desig- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 20 1922;
tion t of the hat pin is inwardly of the guard plate or shield 7 and this guard plate or V shield. 7 has a substantially U-shaped incision 10 formed therein and the material between the lines of the incision bent inwardly to form the guide lug 11. This guide lug 11 is perforated as shown at 12, so that the coil 5 of the hat pin may work back and forth through the same. A; second U- shaped incision 14 is formed in the guard plate adjacent the firstinentioned incision and the material between the lines of the second incision bent inwardly to form a non-perforated guide lug which will direct the coil f the hat pin outwardlyto ride over this guide lug 15. Both of the lugs referredto are formed adjacent the outer edge'of the shield or guard plate 7. A. third incision of U-shaped form is made in the guard plate orshield 7 and designated by the numeral 16 andthe material between the lines-of this U-shaped incision bent inwardly to form a stop lug 17 to limit movement of the hat pin in one direction so that the point 6 of the coil 5 will not be drawn inwardly of the guard plate or shield 7 but will stop at a point about opposite the guide lug 15. This movement of the hat pin in this direction is limited by engagement of the straight portion 4 with the stop lug 17 as the pin is rotated by means of the knob or pin head 3 for the purpose of withdrawing the coil 5 from the wearers hair and drawing the coil into the pocket provided therefor, inwardly of the guide plate or shield 7 or between the guard plate or shield 7 and the hat crown. While the shield or guard plate 7 is shown as being constructed of a transparent material such as celluloid, tin or any other suitable material may be employed and while the guide lugs for the coil 5 are shown as being struck out from the material of the guard plate or shield 7 and bent inwardly and extended. circumferentially or parallel with the straight edge of the guard plate or shield 7 and the stop lug 16 is shown as being extendedinwardly toward the cen-' ter of the guard plate or shield 7, the three lugs may be formed in any other suitable and well known manner.
24. The combined stop and pivot tongue 19 is substantially hook-shapedand is adapted to limit the rotation of the hat pin in either direction by the hat pin engaging in a notch 25 when moved in one direction and when moved in an opposite direction is adapted to engage the combined stop and pivot tongue where it forms onto the plate or shield 18.
The pin when in an inoperative position, the coil portion thereof lies between the hat and the shield or' plate and when movedinto an operative position, the coil portion moves through a slot 26 in the plate or shield, to occupy a position at the opposite side ofthe shield or plate so as to engage in the hair of the wearer.
lVhile I have shown and described the pie 1 ferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes n on struction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. I
What is claimed is 1. A hat pin guard comprising the combination with a guide and guard plate secured to the inner face ofa hat crown and having guide l'ugs and a stop lug formed therewith, of a hat pin stem rotatably' operatingknob carried by said stern out-.
wardly of said hat crown. I
2. A hat pin comprisinga shield, atongue struck upfrom said shield, a pin extending through the tongue and having a coiled hair engaging portion adapted to move from one side of the shield to the other by the rotation of the pin, said tongue adapted to limit the rotation of the pin in one direction, said shield having a slot to permit the coil portion to move from one side to the other side thereof. a V
3. A hat pin structure including a guard plate having an opening therethrough, a pin having a'hair-engaging coil for normal retention on one side of the plate, a lug extending from said side of the plate, said coil being slidably mounted in said lug, said coil being rotatable for projection through said opening to the other sideof the plate when the hat with which it is associated is worn.
41-. A hat pin structure including a guard plate having an opening therethrough, a
pin having a hair-engaging coil for normal retention on one side of the plate, a lug extending from said side of the plate, said coil being slidably mounted in said lug, said coil being rotatable for projection through said opening to the other side of the plate when the hat With Which it is associated is Worn, and said plate having an opening at a distance from the lug through which the coil is projected.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
