THREAD-CUTTING DEVICE FOR THIMBLES.
Application led April S,
This invention has relation to thimbles and has in contemplation more especially a thread-cutting device forming `an integral part of the thimble which can be used when the said thimble4 is `on the finger and which Y is so contrived that it guardedfor protected against catching or causing damage accidentally to the user or wearer or to the workpiece which is being sewn.
My present invention has for its object the production of a si mpic and cheaply coustructed thread-cutting` device for thimbles possessing advantages in point of efficiency and durability in that the cutting device is circular thereby enabling the thread to be out from any side of the thimble; further the said cutting device is located at the top of the thimble andis protected by suitable guards located around the upper periphery of the thimble.
According to this invention the thimble is provided with or has secured to it, at the upper or forward end of the body part ory at or approximately at the junction ofthe body. and the dome or end, a circular cutting device, the edgeof which projects beyond or outwardly from the body and a series of dove-tailed or similar fingers or guards which embrace or project beyond the cutting edge, and are spaced apart at suitabley intervals to expose suiiicient portions or segments of the cutter to cut a thread but to prevent also the cutting edge from cutting the work piece or the user. n
The cutting device may be formed in one with the thimble if the latter is made of a suitable metal or it may be a separate ring or disc secured to the thimble in any appropriate manner. y
'The dovetailed or similar guard fingersv may be formed in one with either the body or the dome of the thimble or-both or they may be carried on a separate ring or band.
With the above mentioned objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction of a thread-cutting device for thimbles used in sewing and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specified in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, sizes, and other minor details of construction withinv the scope of the claims may kbe resorted to without de- 1927. serial No. 182,012. f
parting from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of' the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention reference is directed to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and of which Fig. l is an elevation illustrating a thimble provided with the thread-cutting device.
Fig. 2 isa plan view of' Figure 1 Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of Figure l.
Fig. i is a sectional elevation of a modified arrangement of thread-cutting device;
Figs. 5, 6, yand 7 are fragmentary plan views showing the dovetailed or other shaped guards for the cutting device.
Referring more particularly 'to the sev-y eral views oif the drawings, wherein like reference letters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, A is the cutting device, B the dovetailed guard lingers, C the body of the thimble land l) Vthe top or dome.
Referring to the embodiment of the .invention shown in Fig. l the cutting device A is formed in one with the body of the thimble. Y
This arrangement is suitable when the body of the thimble is made ofstecl or some other metal which can be sharpened to pre- Vide Tan efficient cutting edge.
In this example the upper end i of the thimble body C Ais bent over topi-eject outf wardly and is sharpened to provide or con-y stitute the cutting device A. The dovetailed or similar guard fingers or protectors B are formed on the dome or top D. These fingers are spaced apart around the outer periphery of the top or dome as shown in ure 2. They project over the cutting device B and are bent over as shown. They thus serve to provide openings between them to guide the thread topbe out, to`prevent the possibility of contact of the cutting Vedge with the handr of the user or with the work and at the same time serve to secure the top or dome D of they thimble to the body part C. The top lor dome of the thimble may be secured, however, to the body by other means, and the fingers B may only serve to prevent accidental contact with the cutting device. Conversely the cutting device A may be formed in. one with the top or dome D and the guard fingers B may be formed on the body part C ofthe thimble.
Referring now to the arrangement shovvn in Fig. l the cutting device A in this eX- ample,'is made separate from the thimble and comprises a disc'ring or it may be a ring of steel or other appropriate metal, which is placed on theupper end of the thimble body C. This disc or ring A is ot' slightly larger' diameter than the end of the thimble body so that it projects beyond the thimble Walls. This disc or ring A may be secured to the thimble body by soldering or the like7 or it may be secured in position by the dovetailed or similar guard vfingers B. The guard fingers B are7 in the present case formed in one with the top or dome D. The dome or'top D may be secured to the ring or disc A by any appropriate means or it may be secured as shown by providing a rim or flange 'Cl on the upper end of the thimble body C and bending the ends of the lingers B over to embrace the cutting device A and to pass under the flange or rim G1.
As a modification the dovetailed or similarly shaped guard lingers B may be formed in part on the body (l and in part on 'the top 0r dolne D in which case the lingers B on the body C would be placed alternately with the lingers on the top or dome D.
The guard fingers VB in place oi being formed on the body C or on the top oi dome D may be formed on a ring or band which may be secured to the thiinble body in any appropriate manner.
In Figure 5 a guard B for the lingers from the thread cutting edge A is shown which is of'dovetailed formation or having that coniiguration and it Will be seen in the figin'e in question that the outer edges of this guard. are'closer together and that the taper inner faces are adapted to retain the thread against the edge of the cutting device.
Although the above mentioned dovetailed shaped guard is the preferred arrangement it will be understood that a guard formed as shovvn in Figures 6 and 7 may be employed to enable a ready insertion of the thread.
This invention may be embodied also in Vopen ended or tailors thimbles in which case the cutting device A is conveniently in the form of a ring Which may be made in one with or may be secured to the body of the thimble in any appropriate manner. In this case also the guard lingers B Vmay be carried on a separate band or ring or if the cutting ring A is separate from the thimble7 the fingers E may be formed on the thimble.
In use any one of the exposed portions or sections o'l' the blade is pressed against the thread to be cut by a movement of the linger on which the thimble is carried.
Having now described my invention What I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent is l. A thimble having a tubular body por tion7 and a top plate covering one end of the body portion, one of the said parts being provided at its periphery With a Yseries ot' tingers .spaced apart and projecting laterally around thc body portion of the thiinble, and a thread-cutting device having a sharp edge which projects laterally of the smaller end of the body portion of the thimble within the spaces formed between the said fingers.
A thimble having a tubular body portion, and a top plate covering one end of the body portion7 one et the said parts Ybeing provided at its periphery with a series o't' lingers spaced apart and projecting laterally around the body portion of the thimbie, and;
a thread-cutting disk secured Vvbetween ,the body portion. and top plate and having va sharp edge which projects .laterally of `the smaller end ot the body portion Within the spaces between the said lingers. f
In Witness whereof I aliiX my signature.
