DRA'WING INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, i922.
application inea May es, 1921. serial No. 471,673.
T0 alt whom. t may concern Be it .known that we, Cuantas A. and HENRY F. SCHUH, citizens of the Unitor States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drawing instruments, and more particularly to means for mounting the yoke and handle of'a pair of dividers or compass.
In drawing instruments consisting of a pair of pivoted legs, the legs are connected by means of a yoke and a handle is mounted on the yoke. The yoke is freely mounted 0n the pivot pin connecting the legs, and in prior constructions, no means have been provided for maintaining the handle in a vertical position.
In the present invention, we provide a guide member fiXedly mounted with respect to the yoke and provided with a depending portion. Suitable guide members or connections are senured to each of the legs and engage the depending portion of the guide member. By means of the construction pro vided, the yoke and handle are retained on a line bisecting the angle formed by the pivoted legs and the handle is thus in vertical position when the instrument is to be used.
In the accompanying drawings, we have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing: Y'
Figure l is a side elevation of a pair of dividers showing the invention applied,
Figure 2 is an end elevation,
Figure is a vertical sectional view on line 3 3 of Figure l,
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view on line lf-1l of Figure l, and,
Figure 5 is detail view of the guide member.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numerals l and 2 designate the legs of the instrument. As shown, the leg l is provided with a needle point 3, retained in position by means of set screw el. The leg 2 is likewise provided with a needle point 5 and fastening means 6. As shown, the leg 2 may be split longitudinally, as at and a set screw 8 may be arranged in one side to permit fine adjustments.
The legs are pivotally connected to each other by means of a pivot pin 9. @ne end of the pin is provided with a head 10. the other end being` threaded for the reception of a nut ll. The pivot pin passes through arms l2 of a yoke, the arins being arranged on opposite sides of the legs in the usual manner. The yoke is further provided with a handle or inger grip 13. l
A guide member 14; is iixedly secured to the yoke. As shown, the upper end of the guide member is enlarged, as at 15, to tit over one of the arms l2, being provided with an opening 16 for the passage of the pivot pin. The sides of the guide member are provided with flanges 17, adapted to be arranged on opposite sides of the arm 12 (see Figure Ll). Beneath the lower end of the arm l2, the guide member' is reduced in size, as at 18, and provided with a pair of flanges 19 for the reception of a guide pin 20. This pin passes through the ends of a pair of links 21, pivotally secured to the legs, as at 22. i
In the use of the instrument, the guide `is maintained in. alinenient with the yoke by means of flanges 17. rl`he guido pin 2O rides in the lower portion of the guideway, and when one of the legs is moved, the movement of the guide pin and links Q1 causes the other leg to be moved a corresponding distance toward or away from the center of the instrument. The yoke and finger piece are thus always maintained in a plane bisecting the plane formed by the two legs of the instrument and will be in vertical position when the instrument is placed on the paper for use.
The set screw 8, extending through the two portions of the split leg, permits the outer section to be moved outwardly away from the inner section, thus permitting an adjustment independent of the adjustment of the pivoted legs.
While the invention is illustrated in oonnection with a pair of dividers, it may be applied to any type of instrument embodying a pair of pivoted legs and a yoke.
It is to be understood that the form of our invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement o f parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or thel scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described our invention, we Claim:
l. A drawing instrument Comprising' a pair oi legs, a yoke pivotally nonneeting said legsT a 4guide secured thereto, said guido comprising` aA base and side flanges` a portion of tlie side [langes engaging` the yoke to maintain the guide in elineinentwitli the yoke, and connections between seid guide and said 9'. A drewing' instrument comprising` a pair of legs, e yoke pivotally Connected to said legs, a guide secured thereto, seid guide comprisinga base and side flanges, a por! tion of the side 'flanges engaging the side of `tlie yoke to maintain the yoke in alinement with the guide, said guide being provided with a depending portion arranged between the legs of vthe instrument, a guide pin mounted in said depending portion, and
