To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST A. H. JACOB, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful FeederDrum, of which the following is a specification. a
The device forming the subjectmatter of this application is a drum of that general type in which feeding fingers are advanced and retracted as the drum rotates, and one object of the invention is to provide novel means for operating the fingers.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains. v
lVith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes 1n the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in cross section, a device constructed in accordance with the invention. parts being shown in elevation; Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the drum: Figure 3 is a cross section of the drum: Figure 4 is a fragnlcntal longitudinal section showing the mounting of one of the slides: Figure 5 is a section disclosing one oi the ccccntrics: and Figure (3 is a section disclosing another of the eccentrics.
Although the device forming the subject matter of this application may be used with structures of widely different sorts. there is shown in the drawings by way of illus tration. the baling trunk l of a cotton tramper. the. numeral 2 designating a frame carrying a hopper 3. A shaft 4 extends longitudinally of the hopper 3 and is held in the frame and in the hopper against rotation. A drum 5 is journaled on the shaft -l and includes end walls 6 and a shell 7. the end walls having hubs 8 received on the shaft 4. On one hub 8 there is an abutment 9 engaged by a gear wheel 10, the gear wheel being typical of any suitable means for rotating the drum On the inner surfaces of the end walls 6 of the drum 5 are located pairs of radial guides 11.
Eccentrics 12 are fixed to theshaft 4 adjacent to the hubs 8, each eccentric having a hub 14 carrying a set screw 15 bearing on the shaft 4. Each eccentric 12 is supplied with an inner flange 16. Straps 17, 18 and 19 are mounted on each eccentric 12, the strap 17 having a bearing 22 and the strap 19 having a bearing 21, the strap 18 having a bearing 20. The bearing 20 projects beyond both sides of the strap 18, the bearing 21 projects laterally and inwardly from the strap 19, and the bearing 22 projects laterally and outwardly from the strap 17. Owing to the construction above alluded to, the outer ends of all of the bearings are disposed in a common plane so as to cooperate (see Figure 1) with the end flanges 25 of cross bars or slides 23, 23' and 23", the flanges 25 being slidably mounted between the guides 11. The cross bars or slides 23 may be in the form of channel members having side flanges 24-. The end flanges 25 of the slides 23 carry pivot elements 26 journaled in the bearings 22--20- 21 of the respective straps, the pivot elements being retained in the bearings by cot;

the drum turns on the shaft 4, the shaft and the eccentrics 12 remaining fixed. The straps 17, 18 and 19. cooperating with the eccentrics 12. slide the bars 23 inwardly and outwardly in the guides 11, the fingers 28 being retracted and ad anced as the drum is rotated. The fingers 28. as they are advanced, cooperate with the hopper 3 and pass the cotton or other material out of the hopper.
The inner straps 17 are engaged by the flange 16. the outer straps 19 being in slidable contact with the guides 11, the guides and the flange 16 serving to retain the straps on the eccentrics.
Having thus described the inventiomwhat is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, a fixed shaft; a drum comprising a shell and end walls journaled on the shaft, the end walls having guides; a slide having its enc mounted to reciprocate in the guides; a finger earned by the slide and mounted to reciprocate in the shell; an eccentric fixed to the shaft; and a strap surrounding, the eccentric and pivoted to the slide.
