To all whom may concern Be it known that I, LUTHER llfA'FLHEWS, a citizen of the United vStates, and a resident of Paris, in the county of Henry and State of Tennessee, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in presses, of the character adapted for use in baling hay and like articles, wherein pressing chamber is provided, and a plunger movable longitudinally of the said chamber and having means engaging the chamber for guiding the plunger, together with power operated mechanism for reciprocat ing the plunger.

The present embodiment of the invention comprises a casing consisting of a base 1, and sides 2 extending upwardly from the side edges of the base, and at one end a cover 3 is provided for closing the said end, the cover having a feed. opening 4 at its inner end, and a hopper 5 incloses the said opening.
The hopper is secured to the cover by means of angle plates 6, each of the said plates consisting of two portions arranged at an angle to each other, one of the said portions being secured to the cover and the other to the hopper. That portion of the casing at the covered end is the pressing chamber, and a plunger '4' is movable longitudinally of the said end, the plunger being of a size to loosely fit the said chamber.
The sides 2 of the casing at the pressing chamber are provided with longitudinally extending openings or slots 8, and the plungcr is provided on the face remote from the pressing chamber with a transversely arranged plate 9, the said plate extending perpendicularly from the plunger. Arms 10 are connected with the plunger at each side thereof and below the plate, and the said arms are of considerable width, as shown, and are engaged by rollers 11 below the arms and a roller 12 above the arms, to guide the said arms in their movement. Each of the rollers 11 and 12 is provided with axial 'runnions or journal pins 13, and the said pins engage openings in the side walls 2 of the casing. The plate 9 is a reinforcing plate and engages the upper edges of the arms 10 at the plunger, and extends between the said arms, as shown more particularly in Fig. 1. A power shaft 14: is journaled transversely of the casing at the end remote from the pressing chamber, and the said shaft extends beyond the casing at both ends.
A pulley 15 is secured to one of the extended ends of the shaft, and a fly wheel 16 secured to the other end, and a belt, from a suitable source of power, connected to the pulley 15, to rotate the shaft 1-1. The shaft 14L is also joiurnaled in sectional bearings 17 on the upper edges of plates 18 which are secured to the upper face of the base 1 of the casing at the end adjacent to the shaft 14, and the said plates extend to near the roller 12 before mentioned. At this point the plates are connected by a cross plate 19, and a coil spring 20 is connected at one end to the plunger, and at the other end to the plate 19, the connection being by means of eye bolts 21, as shown.
The spring 20 normally draws the plunger toward the shaft 14,-, and the plunger is moved in the opposite direction, by means of rollers 22 journaled on pins 23 extending laterally from the ends of cross heads 24:, which are keyed on the ends of a shaft 25 journaled in sectional bearings 26 on the plates 18 before mentioned. Each cross head is provided with a central bearing 27 for engaging the shaft, and a key 28 is provided for keying the bearing to the shaft.
A gear wheel 28 is secured to the shaft 25 between the plates 18, by means of a key 29, and the said gear wheel meshes with a pin ion 30 keyed on the shaft let between the plates 18, by means of a rey 31. The upper corners of the free ends of the arms 10 are rounded, as indicated at 32 in Fig. 2, for engagement by the rollers on the cross heads.
The operation of the device is as follows: The shaft 14 is rotated by means of a belt ci'igaging the pulley 15, and as the said shaft rotates the shaft 25 will be driven at a lower rate of speed, the gear wheels 28 and 80 constituting a reducing gear. As the shaft 25 rotates, the rollers 22 at each end of the shaft will revolve around the said shaft 25, and they will alternately engage the rounded end 32 of the adjacent arm 10. The cross heads 24. are parallel with each other, so that the journal pins 23 at the respective ends thereof are in register, and the rollers 22 on the registering pins at each end of the shaft will simultaneously engage the arms 10. As the rollers move past the rounded ends of the shaft, the plunger will be pressed toward the end of the pressing chamber remote from the shaft 14, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. After each movement of the plunger a charge of hay or other material to be pressed is fed to the pressing chamber through the hopper and the opening l. lVhen a bale is completed binding wires may be placed around the same through the slots 8, and when the bale is completed it is grad ually forced out at the open end of the pressing chamber by the newly forming hale. The improved press is exceedingly powerful and the plunger is guided in its movement by the rollers 11 and 12, so that it cannot move laterally or stick in the pressing chamber. The spring 20 retracts the plunger as soon as the rollers 22 pass off the ends of the arms, thus bringing the arms again into position for engagement by the succeeding rollers. The plate 9 limits the movement of the plunger toward the shaft let by its engagement with the cross plate 19.

I claim:
A press comprising a casing having open ends and a feed opening intermediate its ends, a plunger mounted to reciprocate in the pressing chamber and having arms at its ends extending in the opposite direction from the pressing chamber, said arms moving along the inner faces of the side walls of the pressing chamber, rollers journaled transversely of the chamber above and below the arms for guiding the arms, a support aranged within the casing at the opposite end from the pressing chamber, said support being spaced apart from the side walls of the casing, a shaft journaled on the support transversely of the casing and extending beyond the same at each end, a cross head at each end of the shaft, rollers journa-led at the ends of the cross heads for engaging the adjacent arm of the plunger to move the same,
a spring arranged between the support and the plunger for normally drawing the support toward the plunger, and means for rotating the shaft.
