SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,306, dated August 30, 1887.
Application filed May 3, 1587. Serial No. 236,900. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GrmnLns E. WHITMAN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvcmcnt in Billlllg-PFQSSQS, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying d rawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure I is a side elevation, part in section, illustrating myimprovement. Fig. II isa similar view showing the parts in a different position. Fig. III is an enlarged detail view showing part of the frame, part of one of the cogwheels, and one of the levers for operating the packer. Fig. IVis an enlarged elevation, looking at the back of one of the hay-folders. Fig. V is an enlarged detail top view of the brake and clutch. Fig. VI is a similar view showing a modification of the brake. Fig. VII is a top or plan view of the press. My invention relates to certain improvements in baling presses; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to'the drawings, 1 represents the frame of the press; 2, the travcrser or plunger; 8, a. jointed pitman connected to the traverser atone end; 5, cogwheels to which the pitman is connected at the other end; 4, shafts or arbors on which the wheels 5 are secured; 6,
'pinionsmeshing into the wheels 5; 7, a shaft to which the pinious 6 are secured, and which is journaled in boxes secured to the frame of the machine; 8, cog-wheels secured to the shaft '7; 9, pinions meshing into the wheels 8; 10, main drivingshaft, to which the pinions 9 are secured, and which is journaled in boxes secured to the frame; 11, a driving-pulley located on the shaft 10, and 12 a fly-wheel secured to the shaft 10. The pulley is loosely mounted on the shaft and turns freely thereon, except when grasped by a friction device, 13, in which, parse, I claim no invention, and which is secured to the shaft 10 and made to revolve with it. The friction device is made to grasp a flange, 14, of the pulley by means of links 15, secured to a collar, 16, the collar being moved by means of a lever, 17, fulcrumed at 18 to an arm, 19, secured at 20 to the frame of the machine. It will be seen that when the lever is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. VII the friction device will grasp the driving-pulley, causing the rotation of the shaft 10 and the operation of the described gearing, and through means of the gearing will cause the reciprocation of the traverser. I/Vhen the lever is moved in the other direction, the friction device will be disengaged from the pulley, and it is then desirable to stop the rotation of the shaft 10, for which purpose I provide a brake consisting of a pulley or wheel, 21, secured to the shaft 10, and over which passes a strap, 22, connected by one end at 23 to the arm 19, and connected at its other end to a lever, 24, pivoted at to the arm 20, the strap being connected to the lever at 26. By moving the lever in the proper direction the strap will be brought against the periphery of the wheel 21 and prevent the rotation of the wheel and shaft 10, and through them the gearing. It is desirable to have this brake applied just at the time the friction device releases the pulley, and to have the brake released just at the time the friction device grasps the pulley, for the purpose of stopping The traverser the instant the power is removed. For this purpose I operate the strap 22 by the same lever, 17 ,that operates thefriction clutch, by connecting the lever 24 to the lever 17 by means of a link, 27. It will thus be seen that with this arrangement the brake will be applied just at the time the clutch device releases the pulley, and that the brake will be removed just at the time the clutch grasps the pulley, and this by the operation of but a single lever.
As the shafts or arbors 4, upon which the wheels 5 are mounted, are quite short and do not extend across the machine, they do not interfere with thepitman. The shaft secures the outer end of the pitman 3 to the wheels5 and extends across from one wheel to the other, as shown in Fig. VII, and it will be seen that as the wheels5 are revolved or turned the pitman will be forced forward or backward, operating the traverser.
For the purpose of accelerating the movement of the traverser through means of the pltman 3, as shown and described at length in the application filed by me December 30, 1886, No. 223,024, I joint it instead of making it in one part, as stated, and cause it to move out of a straight line by means of one or more cams or guides, 26, secured to the frame of the machine. I have shown these cams or guides each consisting of a semicircular piece of the shape in crossseetion of that shown in Fig. XI, and in which fits the respective ends of a pin or roller, 30, that connects the two parts of the pitman. The cams may, however, be straight, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. II.
It will' thus be seen that as the wheels 5 revolve the pitman will be thrown out of line, and will be removed by means of the guides or ways from the position shown in Fig. VIII to the position shown in Fig. II, and vice versa.
It is not considered necessary here to describe more fully the advantages of thus accelerating the movement of the traverser, as the same is set forth at length in the application referred to, my object in this application, so far as relates to this part ofthe machine, be ing to cover this particular device for accelerating the movement of the traverser by throwing the jointed pitman out of line.
I do not confine myself to the use of two guides or cams, as one might be used; nor do I wish to confine myself to the exact shape of the guides or cams, as the same might be changed or modified without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The traverser is provided with a springplate, 32, on its upper face, and beneath which it is recessed, as shown at 33, Fig. II, the front edge of the plate being turned down, as shown at 34.
35 represents springarms secured to the frame of the press at 36, and to the forward free ends of which is hinged or secured a pendant, 37, provided with a roller,38, which bears against a cross-piece, 39, of the frame to relieve the friction. This pendant is preferably made in stirrup form, as shown in Fig. IV, with an incline, 40, below a point, 41, and an, incline, 42, above this point.
As the hay is forced into the baling-press it bears against the incline 42 and slides past the pendant. As the traverser comes forward the plate 32 strikes the inclines of the pendant and lifts it into the position shown in Fig. I, the arms 35 springing upward. Then, as the traverser moves back, the material that may be projecting beyond the timber 39, as is frequently the case, is folded or forced down into the bali ng-chamber by means of the pendant 37, which is moved by the arms 35 from the position shown in Fig. Ito that shown in Fig. II as soon as the traverser recedes. The material thus folded down is forced by the next charge forward into the baling-chamber,
instead of being allowed to clog and prevent the easy movement of the traverser.
The object of providing the spring-plate 32 and space 33 is to allow any projecting material to get in between the traverser and the strip or frame 39 without materially affecting the forward movement of the traverser, the spring-plate yielding to the pressure. This, however, is not new, per 86. v

As a means for forcing or packing each charge into the baling-chamberjust in advance of the forward movement of the traverser, I provide a board'or plate, 44, hinged at its upper edge to the inner end of levers 45, fulcrumed at 46 on standards 47, secured to the frame of the machine. Secured to the board or strip at 48 are also arms 49, pivoted by means of a pin, 50, to the standards 47. It will thus be seen that as the lever is raised and lowered the board or strip 44 will move in a substantially vertical plane, the arms 49 preventing it from swinging on the lever 45. I have shown two of the levers 45, and each is preferably provided with a counter-balance,5l.
52 represents a yoke having astem, 53, pass ing through a cross-strip, 54, with a nut, 55, above the strip, and a nut, 56, beneath the strip.
57 represents a spring placed between the strip and the nut 56, so that as the board or plate 44 is forced downward into the balingchamber on top of the hay there would be no danger of it or the lever 45 being broken, for the reason that when too much resistance is offered the spring 57 will be compressed.
Connected to the lower end ofthe yoke 52 are arms or levers 58, pivoted at 59 to the frame of the machine, and provided with pins or rollers 60, fitting in cam-grooves 61 in the wheels 5, each cam-groove having a depression, 62, and while the pins or rollers are in this portion of the grooves the forward ends of the levers or arms 58 are raised and the board 44 depressed by a quick positive movement, packing the hay into the baling-chamher. This takes place after the hay is thrown into the chamber and just before the forward movement of the traverser. The yoke 52 is connected to the levers 58 by a pin or rod, 63,
entering holes 64 in thelevers 58, there being preferably two ormore of these holes, to allow for the adjustment of the yoke to increase ordiminish the throw of the lever 45, and consequently the plate 44. The packer being operated by a quick positive movement, the ma-' terial is thoroughly compressedjustbefore the traverser advances, and before the traverser reaches the packer it has retreated.
In Fig. IX there is shown aslight modification of the connection between the yoke and the lever, wherein the lever is placed forward of the standards 47, so thatit pulls downward upon the lever instead of forcing upward, the spring 57 being placed above the lever. In

this case the yoke 52 is connected to the forward end of links 75, connected at 76 to the frame of the machine, the pins or rollers connecting the yoke to the links fitting in the cam grooves 61 of the wheels 5. Another slight modification of this is shown in Fig. X, where, instead of the links 75. the yoke is simply provided with pins or rollers, and the yoke is prevented from moving in a horizontal plane by means of guides or keepers 77.
In case the traverser should ever strike the board 44, or in case hay should get between them, I have provided for a slight horizontal movement of the lower end of the board by placing a spring, 78, in the end of the arm 49, back of the pivot pin or red 50.
As a modification of the strap-brake 22, I have shown in Fig. VI a shoe, 22%, connected to the inner end of the lever, the pivot 25 of the lever in this case being between its end and the link 27.
.I claim as my invention- 1. In a baling-press, the combination of the driving-shaft, loose pulley thereon, a clutch device secured thereto, an operating-lever pivoted to a projection from the frame of the press, a brake -wheel mounted on the shaft, strap surrounding the brake-wheel,secured at one end to said projection and at the other end to the device for bringing it against the periphery of the wheel, the latter device con sisting of a toggle pivoted to said projection and to the elntchoperating lever, and suitable connection between the brake-strap and the link of the toggle, which is pivoted to the projection intermediate of its pivotal connection, whereby the clutch and brake are operated simultaneously, substantially as set forth.-
2. In a balingpress, in combination with a traverser, means for operating the traverser, ajointed connection between said means and the traverser, and a curved or semicircular cam located between the means and the traverscr, and with which the jointed connection engages, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a baling-press, the combination ofthe traverser, means for imparting movement to the traverser, a jointed pitman, a connection between the traverser and means, and a cam or guide, 28, with which the jointed pitman engages and is carried out of line, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a baling-press, in combination with the traverser, means for imparting movement to the traverser, semicircular cams or guides 28, pitman 3, and pins connecting the pitman at its joints with the guides or cams, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a baling-press. the combination ofthe traverser, cogwheels 5, jointed pitman connecting the tra-verser to the wheels, guides or cams secured to the frame of the machine, connections between the pitman and the guides or cams, and means for turning the cog-wheels, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. 10. In a haling-press, in combination with the traverser and means for operating it, an intermittently movable packer and means connecting the packer to the means for operating the traverser, said connecting means consisting of a pivoted lever and a rod,53, be-
tween the lever and packer, substantially as lever, yoke 52 on the rod, a compressible spring on the latter allowing movement to the plate when offered too much resistance, and lever connecting the yoke to the mechanism for operating the traverscr, substantially as set forth.
13. In a bailing-press, in combination with the traverser and wheel for operating the traverser, provided with eanrgroove 61 62, pivoted lever 58, having projection fitting in said groove, rod 53, connected to said lever, lever 45, to which the rod is connected, and plate 44, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
14. In abalingpress, in combination with the traverser and means for operating it,consisting of wheels provided with grooves 61 62, pivoted levers 5S, connection between the levers and the grooves, rod 53, adjnstably eonnccted to the levers, pivoted lever 45, to which the rod is connected,and plate 44, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
