. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES N. GALLAND, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO MULTICOLOR PRINTING AND MACHINERY COMPANY,
IPORATION OF SOUTH DAKD'IA.
0F MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, A COR- CYLINDRICAL TYPE-BORDER.
Application filed July 15, 1918.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES N. GALLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylindrical Type-Borders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide as an improvement in printing devices a so-called knock-down metallic printing border, and to such ends generally stated, the invention consists of the novel construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
I11 the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention, like characters indi cate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view with some parts broken away showing the border applied to the cylinder of a press;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing one corner portion of the printing border;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken proximately on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a view corresponding in the line of its section to Fig. 4, but showing only the printing border.
The cylinder 6 is secured to a shaft 7 shown as equipped with a gear and certain other devices not necessary for the purposes of this case to consider. The cylinder is provided with a plurality of longitudinal circumferentially spaced rows of threaded perforations 8.
A pair of circumferentially spaced longitudinal clamping bars 9 are adjustably secured to the cylinder by screws 10 screwed into certain of the perforations 8. For cooperation with the bars 9 a pair of curved end clamping bars 11 are secured to the cylinder by screws 12 that work through slots 13 in said bars 11. The slots 13 permit slight adjustments of the bars 11 after they are loosely attached to the cylinder.
The cylindrical printing border is made up of a pair of parallel circumferentially v Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 244,925.
spaced longitudinally extended printing bars 141 and curved end printing bars 15. At their outer faces, the bars 14: have printing ribs 14 preferably of materially less width than the said bars 1 1, but extended from end to end thereof, and likewise, the curved printing bars 1% have projecting printing ribs 15. The ribs 1 1* and 15 when inked will print a rectangular border under rotation of the cylinder. The ends of the bars 1% are reduced in width to the width of the printing ribs 14 thereof, and these reduced ends are rigidly, but detachably, secured to the ends of the curved bars 15 by screws 16. The rectangular border thus made up of the bars 1 1 and 15 is a knock-down structure in which the straight bars 1 1 may be used with curved bars 15 of different length, or the said curved bars 15 may be used with straight bars 14 of different lengths, thereby providing an interchangeable element printing border by the provision of a plurality of the said bars varying in length.
For holding the printing border on the cylinder, the curved clamping bars 11 and the curved printing bars 15 are formed with interlocking V-shape groove and rib joints 17, best shown in Fig. 3. The clamping bars 9 are simply set up snugly against the straight printing bars 14. The printing border described is adapted to hold in position within it a multiplicity of interlocking type 18, the end members of which are anchored to the curved bars 15 by tongue and groove joints 19. Of course, also printers furniture may be secured in the frame in like manner.
What I claim is:
1. A cylinder printing border made up of straight side bars and curved end bars, one of the said end bars having a projecting lock flange and the other a lock groove for interlocking engagement with interlocking type or the like.
2. The combination with a cylinder, circumferentially spaced straight clamping bars, cooperating curved end clamping bars and means for adjustably securing said clamping bars on said cylinder, of a cylindrioal printing border made up of straight side bars and curved ends bars, the said curved clamping bars and curved printing bars having interlocking engagement.
3. The combination With a cylinder, circuinferentially spaced straight clamping hers, eoperating curved end clamping bars means for adjustably securing said clamping bars on said cylinder, of a cylindrical printing border made up of straight side bars and curved end bars; the said curved clamping bars and curved printing hersha ving interlocking engagement, and
the'bars of said printing border being de- 10 tachably connected at their abutting ends.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of twu Witnesses;- i i i 7 CHARLES N. GALLAND.
t Witnesses:
CLARA DEMAREST, B. G. BAUMANN.
