Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 29, 1913. Serial No. 764,424.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATHERINE R. OKANE, a citizen of the United States, re-. siding at Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Duplicating: Ma chines, whereofthe following is a specificatio-n, reference being had to the accompanyingldrawing s. l y improvement is particularly applicable to printing machines of the type known commercially as the Multigraph comprising a rotary printing cylinder having a series of undercut channels in 1ts perimeterextending parallel with its axis to receive complementary shaped flanged type which said cylinder presents in opposition to the other member of the printing couple. As ordinarily constructed, all of the letters, numerals, punctuation marks, etc., are printed from respectively separate individual type which must be set in said channels which, extend parallel with the axis of the curved surface in which said" channels are formed. Consequently in ordervto print tabular work, including vertical-columns of figures,decimal points, dittomarks, etc., in which each character is dividual type, it is necessary to set said type individually in successive channels extending parallel with the axis of the printing drum and to provide means for maintaining such separate type in a plane at right angles to said axis, for, unless said type are accurately set and them in such 'a inement, they present an irregular appearance. 7
Therefore, it is an object of my invention to provide such a machine with means to present a series of figures or other printing characters in lines at right angles to the lines of words, and, as hereinafter described, such means include bridge type curved to fit circumferentiall and preferab y having means fitting in said undercut channels therein adapted to retain it in set position, each of said bridge type having a lurality of distinct printing faces respective y radially coincident with the channels aforesaid; so that the series of printing faces carried by eachof said bridge type extending circumferentially with represented by an inrovided with means to hold upon said printing cylinder of the latter, 1

Fig. II is a fragmentary plan view of a portlon of said cylinder with ordinary letter type and my improved bridge type set therein. Fig. III is an end'view of the elements shown in Fig. II. Fig. IV is a detached view of a complete bridge type such as shown in Figs. II and III. Fig. V is an end view of said bridge-type.
In said figures; the rotary printing drum- 1 has the undercut channels 2, extending in itsperimeter parallel with its axis. The ordinary letter type 3 have flanges 5 complementary to and adapted to fit in any one of said channels; said type having means to engage but one of said channels at a time and having a printing face presenting but a single character. The bridge type 7, 8 and 9 being curved to fit the circumference of said drum l aare held thereon by flanges 11 complementary to and fitted in said channels. I have shown such flanges only at opposite ends of said bridge type, but it is to be understood that such type may be provided with intermediate flanges when said type are of such length as to render such additional securing means desirable. series of printing faces 13, 14 and 15 extending circumfcrentially with respect to the curved surface of said drum 1; each of said printing faces being a distinct character, and all of the several printing,faces of the bridge type being respectively radially coincident with the channels 2 aforesaid; sons to be presented in alinement with the ordinary type set in said channels. Although I have shown said bridge type provided with flanges complementary to the channels 2 in the drum, so that it is necessary to setthem by slipping them into said channels at the ends ike the ordinary type afore said; I do not desire to limit myself to such construction as such type may be provided with other securing means. Moreover, although I find it convenient to cast said bridge type of ordinary type metal molded in t shown; it is to be understood that such type may be cast in straight strips and subsee curved form to fit said drum 1 as Furthermore, although I have shown each of said bridge type provided with a series of distinct printing faces which are all alike on a single type; it is to be understood that a series of printing faces thus formed in u'nitary relation with a single bridge' type may present respectively different characters; for instance, a numerical or alphabetical sequence. Moreover, although I have shown all of the bridge type aforesaid provided with series of printing faces it is to be understood that such type may be made in blank form as indicated at 20 in II. Said blank 20 may be otherwise foruied like the bridge type shown in Fig. IV; vizawith flanges complementary to said channels 2, or be provided with other suitable means for the drum. When the type have been assembled in said drum 1 in the desired relation the inked ribbon 17 is drawn over the type faces and secured by connection with the rollers 18 and 19 which are mounted in said drum as indicated in Fig. I, so that when a sheet of paper is interposed between the platen 21 and said drum and the latter turned until the platen is shifted to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. I, said sheet is imprinted with an impression made from said ordinary type and bridge type through said inked ribbon.
I do not desire to limit myself'to the precise details of construction and arrangement above described, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departingfrom the essential features of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. In a duplicating machine, the combination with a rotary printing drum having a plurality of undercut channels in its periphcry; of individual character type having .fianges fitted in said channels and each havin a single character printing face; and bridge'type extending clrcumferentially on said drum transversely to a plurality of said channels, having flanges fitted in said channels, and each having a plurality of distinct printing faces respectively radially coincident with said channels; whereby said faces, on said bridge type, are respectively presented in alinement with said individual character type set in said channels.
2. In a duplicating machine, the combination with a rotary printing drum having a plurality of undercut channels in its periphery; of individual character type having flanges fitted in said channels and each having a single character printing face;-and bridge type extending circumferentially on said drum transversely to a plurality of said channels, having a plurality of distinct printing faces respectively radially. coincident with said channels whereby said faces,

In a duplicating machine, the combination with a member having a surface formed to carry rows of individual character type; of a bridge type, of the same width as one of said character type, fitted to extend over said surface transversely with respect to a plurality f channels and having flanges complementary to and fitted in said chan-' surface formed to carry rows 0 parallel with its axis; of

9. In a duplicating machine, the combination with a member having a surface formed to carry rows of individual character type; of a bridge type, of the same width as one of said character type, fitted to extend over said surface transversely with respect to a plurality of said rows.
10. In a duplicating machine, the combination with. a member having a curved surface with channels parallel to its axis formed to carry rows of individual character t having flanges complementary to and fitted in said channels; of a bridge type, of the same width as one of said character type,

In a duplicating machine, the combination with a member having a surface with parallel channels formed to carry rows of individual character type having flanges complementary to and fitted in said channels; of a bridge type, of the same width as -one of said character type, fitted to extend over said surface transversely with respect to a plurality of said channels and having integral flanges complementary to and fitted in said channels at the opposite ends of said type; whereby the intermediate portion of said bridge type is supported without channel engaging means.
15. In a duplicating machine, the coma member having a surface formed to carry rows of individual character type; of a bridge type, of the same width as one of said character type, means at the ends only of said type for securing said type to the member and fitted to extend over said surface tnansversely with respect to a plurality of said rows.
16. In a duphcatin machine, the combination with awmem er having a curved surface formed to carry rows of individual character type parallel with its axis; of means presenting rows of character printing faces parallel with each other but extending transversely with respect to said axis including bridge type eac'h'coextensive with a plurahty of rows of the other type having integral means at the ends only of 'said' type for securing said'type to said member.
17. In a duplicating machine, the combination with a member having a surface formed to carry parallel rows of individual character type; of means presenting rows of character printing faces extending transversely with respect to the other rows, including a bridge type coextensive with a plurality of rows of the other type having integral means at the. ends only of said type for securing said type to said member.
