' he Hammond 'lypeJVriter, and has for 1 its object to prevent the blurring or soiling-of the paper caused by the deposit of ink from the ribbon onto and about the edges of the hole formed through the ribbon-shield for the passage oi the imprcssion-hammer, which forces the paper against the shield and type.

It consists in the application to the ribbonshield, between it and the ribbon, of a plate or plates, bar, ring, or other elevated surface, of metal or other suitable material, arranged parallel with the ribbon-shield at each side of, or surrounding the edges of, the hole in the shield, so as to form a depression thereat, by which arrangement the ribbon is prevented from coming in contact with the edges of the hole and adjacent parts of the shield, and the deposit of ink thereon consequently avoided.

Hammond type-writer; Fig. 2, an end view thereof; Fi a perspective view of the type- According to a preferable mode of carrying out my invention, I solder or otherwise attach to the ribbon side or face of the shield a two plates, '71-, of equal thickness, which are located one on each side of the hammer-hole j and extend horizontally some way along and parallel with the shield a. The inner ends of the plates 7;, which are at a suitable distance from and parallel with the vertical side edges of the hole j, may extend entirely across the 1 shield a,by which arrangement a vertical slot or depression, Z, formed between the slneld a and ribbon immediately opposite and adjacent to the hammer-holej, so that while the ribbon is thereby enabled to make contact between the type-wheel and paper in the act of printing it is prevented by the plates in from touching the edges of the holej in the shield CI, and so soiling the paper, as is the case at present.

I claim A type-writer ribbon-shield having a hammer-hole with elevated sur. aces at the sides of the hammer-hole, so as to form adepression thereat, substantially as described, and for wheel guard with my improved ribbon-shield i applied thereto; Fig. l, a front elevation of the improved ribbon-shield to an enlarged scale; and Fig. 5 a section thereof on line 1 1 1 in Fig. l, like letters of reference denoting like parts in all the figures.
