Description

S. T. MQGANLESS. Cotton and Hay Press.
emf/01 Patented June 4,1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL T. MCGANLESS, OF CARTERSVILLE, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON AND HAY PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,442, dated June 4, 1878; application filed May 15,1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. McGANLEss, of Cartersville, in the county of Bartow and State of Georgia, have invented a Machine for Packing Cotton, Hay, and other like substances, of which the following is a specification:
My invention is a roller turning at the upper part of a packin g-box, having a slit through its middle for its whole length, in which is a movable bar wider than the diameter of the roller, there being at each end of the roller a circular eccentric stationary flange-plate, in which the roller revolves, and in this revolution the bar is pressed against the flanges of the plates, and is thereby made to project out of the roller on the side opposite the pressure, and to crowd down in the box the substance to be packed, and in the further revolution of the roller the other side of the bar is pressed against the flanges, and thus the bar is reversed, and is made to project out of the roller on the other side, and thus to carry on the packing, the objects of this invention being to pack without the necessity of putting in at once all the material of a bale, and with the same power to pack more in the same space, and to pack at less expense than by the ma chines now in use, and to pack in a box no larger than the intended bale.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is the box with the roller in it. Fig. 2 is the roller with the reversible bar in section.
a is the packing-box. c is the roller. 9 is the reversible bar. 0 0, at each end of the box, is the circular eccentric flange-plate.
The machine is fed at the top of the box. The roller is turned by a power applied at its end from the outside. As the roller turns, the bar is pressed against the flanges of the circular eccentric plates, and thereby is thrust out of the slit on the side of the roller opposite the pressure as far as its width exceeds the diameter of the roller, and crowds down in the box the substance to be packed. When the substance to be packed has thus been crowded beneath the roller the projecting part of the bar is returned, by the pressure of the flanges, to the slit, and the other side of the bar is thrust out, and carries on the packing.
I claim as my invention- 1. The roller with the slit and reversible bar, as hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination of the roller, bar, and eccentric flan ge-plates, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
SAMUEL T. MGOANLESS.
