Description

HpKENNflDY. Machine for Baling Bran, 81.0.
No. 226,523. 4 Patented April 13,1880.

N- PETERS, FNOTO-LITHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. D. (L
NITED STATES PATENT Erica HOSEA KENNEDY, OF HARLANS-BIIRG, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR BALING BRAN, aw.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,523, dated April 13, 1880,
Application filed January 30, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOSEA KENNEDY, of Harlansburg, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Baling Bran, Feed, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an end view; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to machines for baling hay 5 and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts of a machine adapted to form a hollow cylindrical bale or package or envelope of hay, which may be packed with bran, mill-feed, out straw, or similar material suitable for feeding animals, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, A is the bed or platform of the machine, which supports an upright, a, and an end piece, B, upon which is secured the rear end of a stationary cylindrical casing, 0, open at its opposite end and from w to c in its circumference. D is a shaft journaled in the standard a and in the end piece,B, and provided with a pulley, d, for rotating it.
Shaft D is secured centrally in a cylindrical head, E, and has inserted upon it a loose sleeve, F. G G are arms (of which there may be two or more) united to sleeve F by short links 9 g, and H H are teeth, which are inserted permanently into and project outwardly from the arms G G, passing through perforations in arms I I, which are fixed in the cylinder-head E, and rotate with this in operatin g the machine.
K is a sheet-metal cylinder, which is held in place upon the head E within the stationary open cylinder 0, and concentric to this and to shaft D by the teeth H H, passing through perforations in the wall of the cylinder.
If the sleeve F is turned in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2, it will withdraw the teeth H H from the cylinder K, which may then be withdrawn from the cylinder-head and from the cylindrical open envelope or casing O.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my machine will be readily understood. The hay which is to form the wrapper or envelope of the bale is fed by an endless apron into the opening 0 in the cylindrical casing (J, where it is seized by the projecting ends of the teeth H H and wound around the forming-cylinder K as this rotates. When an envelope of suflicient thickness has been formed the machine is stopped, and the cylinder, with its wrapper of hay, is withdrawn by turning sleeve F, which releases the teeth H H, as hereinbefore described. Another empty cylinder is inserted into the machine in its place, and the hay-covered cylinder which has just been withdrawn is packed with the bran or feed which is to form the body or contents of the bale. After this has been done the thin sheet-metal cylinder is withdrawn, and the bale is subjected to hydraulic or other heavy pressure to compact it, and bound with cords or bands in the usual manner of baling hay or straw to form a merchantable article suitable for transportation and storage.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a machine for forming hay wrappers or envelopes for the baling of bran, mill-feed, or cut straw, the combination, with a stationary outer cylindrical casing provided with an opening or inlet for the straw, of a hollow removable cylindrical former provided with means of attachment to a rotary cylinder-head, which said means of attachment also serve to attach and hold the hay upon the former durin g its rotation within its casing, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.
2. The described machine for forming. hay wrappers or envelopes for the baling of bran, mill-feed, or cut straw, consisting, substantially, of the cylindrical casing 0, open at c, and having fixed end piece, B, rotary shaft D, provided with the cylinder head E and pulley In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in :0 presence of two Witnesses.
HOSEA KENNEDY.
Witnesses EDWIN P. HAZEN, WILLIAM HEBERLING.
