Abstract

A simple, sturdy cutter press reliable in operation is provided by building a round baler (23) together with a known unit consisting of a pick-up (10) and a combined conveyor and cutter (16, 18, 20).

Description

cutter press
Increasing interest attaches to baling hay and ensilage, especially where acreage is small and distances great. The quality of baled ensilage can be just as good as ensilage from silo, provided that packaging in plastics has been performed carefully. Practical tests show that a safer and better quality is obtained when the material in the bales has been cut up, because of a considerably better compac¬ tion, while obtaining a greater density.
The invention concerns a cutter press comprising a round baler which, is built together and is fed by a combined pick-up and cutter, and of the type stated in the intro¬ ductory portion of the claim.
The known round balers of this type employ feed systems consisting of more or less expensive rollers and/or belts to convey the material form the conveyor drum of the cutters to the baler.
The object of the invention is to provide a cutter press of the present type -which is more simple, sturdy and re- liable in operation than the known ones.
This object is achieved in that the cutter press is con¬ structed as stated in the characterizing portion of the claim, since this arrangement, known per se, of the pick- up and the feed passage inlet end defined by the conveyor drum and the stationary wall has been found capable of generating such a great pressure at the discharge end of this passage, which leads directly to the baler, that further conveyor means are superfluous. An embodiment of the cutter press of the invention is shown schematically in vertical section in the drawing, and will be described more fully below with reference to the drawing.
The parts shown in the drawing are mounted in a generally known manner on a frame (not shown). They comprise a pick¬ up 10 with support wheels 11 and a roller 12 having resi¬ lient pick-up fingers 13, which move the picked-up mate- rial up to the inlet to a passage 14 defined between a stationary wall 15 and a rotating conveyor drum 16. A free-running roller 17 facilitating conveyance of the ma¬ terial is provided at this passage inlet. The drum 16 is equipped with conveyors 18 pressing the material up through the passage, whose uppermost portion is downwardly defined by adjustable strippers 19. The relative position of the pick-up and the conveyor entails that the pick-up fingers lift the material up towards the downwardly moving conveyors which abruptly force the material into an almost opposite direction and thereby compact it. Cutters 20, which are pivotally journalled on a shaft 21, cut up the passing material. A safety mechanism 22 of a known type, which will not be described more fully here, makes it pos¬ sible for the cutters to yield to possible hard objects, . e.g. stones, which follow the straw material up into the passage 14, against the action of springs or hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders moving the cutters back to their work¬ ing positions when the object in question has passed.
The shown round baler, which is of a generally known type, has a plurality of rotatable rollers 23, which are ar¬ ranged along the circumference of a cylinder of circular cross-section and which are all driven in the same direc¬ tion of rotation, in the drawing counterclockwise, by means of a chain drive (not shown). Furthermore, the round baler is provided in a known manner (not shown) with means for tying the produced bale and discharging the tied bale.
As appears from the drawing, the passage 14 terminates directly in a gap 24 between two of the rollers 23, where the pressure of the material, thanks to the described ar¬ rangement of pick-up and conveyor, is sufficiently high for the round baler to be fed effectively without the use of additional conveyor means.
Other types of round balers than the shown one may be used, e.g. a baler of the type having belts or bands mov¬ ing in a closed path.

Claims

P a t e t C l a i m
A cutter press comprising a round baler which is built to¬ gether with and is fed by a combined pick-up and cutter, said cutter being formed by a set of cutter knives coope¬ rating with a drum which is equipped with conveyors and which defines a material transport passage together with a stationary wall and a set of strippers, c h a r a c ¬ t e r i z e by the combination of
a location of the inlet opening of the round baler immedi¬ ately at the discharge end of the material transport pas¬ sage such that the conveyors press the material directly into the round baler, and
an arrangement of the pick-up and the conveyor drum such that they rotate with the same direction of rotation, said pick-up being positioned behind the conveyor drum so that when meeting the conveyors the picked-up material is sub¬ jected to an abrupt change in direction and is consequent¬ ly pre-compacted.
