v A TTOR/VEY llitllTE STATES PAUL SCHIMIDT, OF PASSAIC, NEW JERSEY.
HAT HOLDER.
misses.
Application filed December 5, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL SoHM1DT, a citizen ofGermany, residing at Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide eiiicient means for disposing and safely retaining a hat or like article while the owner is in a theatre, church or like auditorium, the hat being held unobtrusively within reach and sight, thus avoiding danger of misappropriation or damage by crushing or defilement by contact with unclean surfaces.
This object, together with the obvious ease of operation and low cost of construe tion, is attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of a short row of seats of conventional type, one showing the application of the invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the clip in detail.
Figure 3 is a side view of the same.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the outer main element thereof.
Figure 5 is a similar view of the fixed or base member.
In the drawing, the numeral 10 designates in general one of a series of chairs arranged side by side ina row, each having a seat and back portion 11 and 12 respectively.
Attached at substantially the center of the rear side of the back portion of each chair, is a plate 15, the same being essentially fiat and gene ally triangular in outline, and Pl'OYldGCl with one'or more openings to receive retaining screws, as 16.
The lower arcuate lobe 17 is formed with a plurality of transverse serrations or teeth 18, their purpose becoming apparent further on.
At the upper or base portion of the triangular plate are spaced extensions 19 coiled or rolled to form headings or hinge elements 20.
The other, outer element, is also made of sheet metal formed into a lobed extremity 21, provided with coacting serrations, this lobed portion, extending from an outwardly Specification of Letters Patent.

bowed portion 23 merging into a base 2&, having extensions 25.
From these spaced extensions protrude oppositely disposed lateral pintles 26 adapted to be received in the headings 20, and also formed with the extensions 25, in register with the pintles, are short lugs 2. the function of which is to enter and maintain in operative position, a helically coiled torsion spring 28, its opposite ends 29 and 30 being extended to impinge 5PGCi1iYBly against the base platel5 and outer hinged elements 25 in such manner as to hold them in close contact at their lobed ends.
The distance or width across the extremities 25 is equal to that of the space between the headings 20 and, as the pintles turn in the headings, the outer element is prevented from side movement and held in register with the base element, but can be raised by grasping the extending bowed portion, in the manner of a handle, so as to permit the entrance of an article, as the hat shown in Figure 1, between the lobes 1.7 and 21, and which will be securely held due to their serrations and clamping etlect obtained from the torsion of the spring 28.
Having thus described my invention and set forth the manner of its construction, application and use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A clothing support clip comprising a flatsheet metal plate substantially triangular in outline, means for securing said plate to a support, a plurality of transverse serrn tions on said plate, hollow beadings integrally formed on the edge of said plate opposite said serrations, a second sheet metal plate having a centrally outwardly bowed portion, transverse serrations on said. plate registerable with the first named serrations, extensions on the edge of said second plate opposite the serrations and fitting between said headings, pintles projecting laterally from said extensions suited to enter said headings, coiled torsional spring between said extensions, the ends of said spring being operative to close the second plate upon the first, and means formed with said second plate for confining said spring in operative position.
In witness whereof I ailix my signature.
PAUL SCHMIDT.
