ARTICLE-HOLDING CLIP.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PATRICK W. MoGUInE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tottenville, Staten Island, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Article-Holding Clips, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a metalholding clip or bracket for temporarily holding various articles such, for example, as a hat or the like; and is designed to-be secured to a stationary support as the back of a chair or seat in a place of amusement or conveyance,

or to the back of a church pew or the like.

It has for its object to provide an article of this character which will securely retain the particular article of .the occupant without inflicting injury thereto; and, furthermore, has for its object to provide a one-piece, simple and inexpensive bracket or clip member for this purpose.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved clip, illustrating the manner of using same.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. an end elevation.

Fig. 1 is a vertical section taken on the line 1- 1, Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a back plate or body portion of spring metal, having lateral wings 11 preferably directed angularly from the body portion, and the said wings having ends 12 lying in a plane parallel to the said body portion. The ends 12 are provided with suitable openings for holding screws 13 or the like and by which the bracket or clip may be secured to a stationary support 15, such as the back of a chair.

part of its length. The tongue 17 is directed rearwardly and then forwardly to extend slightly beneath the tongue 16, but continues outwardly beyond the forward edge of the body portion and the said tongue 16. It is then bent downwardly substantially to the plane of the ends 12, being preferably roughened upon its outer surface at this point to insure a better hold on an article held between this portion and the support 15. It is then looped back upon itself, as indicated, to form a spring finger 18 for the article to be held-in the case of a hat 19, thru its brim, ample space being provided to accommodate the curled portion of the hat. The finger 18, moreover, may serve as a hand piece for lifting the tongue from its holding position ofthe article to release the latter. The inner portion of the tongue 16, also, is designed to contact more or less with the portion of the tongue 17 immediately beneath same to reinforce this tongue in its holding action, the clip being thus provided in eifect with a double spring. p

The article hereinbefore described is of extremely simple construction and is particularly efiective in its holding capacity thru the provision of the additional sprin exemplified in the tongue 16; and may rea ily be securely attached to a support thru the holding screws 13.

I claim 1. An article clip adapted for attachment to a support and comprising: a back plate or body portion having attaching means, a short tongue and a long tongue extending respectively from opposite ends of the body portion, each tongue being reversely folded back from the body portion so that the long tongue may contact with theshort tongue, the latter being efiective to increase the resilient action of the long tongue which terrminates beyond the body portion in a holding portion to hold an article between itself and the support to which the clip is attached.

2. An article clip adapted for attachment to a support and comprising: a back plate or body portion having wings for attachment to a support, a short tongue and a long tongue extending respectively from opposite 9- ends of the body portion, each tongue being reverseiy folded back from the body portion so that the long tongue may contact with the short tongue the latter being effective to increase the resilient action of the long tongue which terminates beyond the body portion in a holding portion to hold an article hetween itself and the support to which the clip is attached.
