UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MCCONNELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPONGE-CUPS.
Specification forming part of Leiters Patent No. 141,573,V dated August 5, 1873; application filed July 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WrLLrAM McUoNNELL, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a Reversible Pen-VViper, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to enable a pen-wiping` sponge to be reversed in its Water vessel or cup Without soiling` the lingers; and I attain this object by attaching the sponge to a band or holder, A, (see elevation, Fig. l of the accompanying drawing,) which rests upon the top of the Water vessel or cup B when one of theprojecting portions of the sponge is inserted into the latter, as shown in the sectional view, Fig. 2.
Pen-wipers of this class, as heretofore constructed, have consisted simply of a sponge inserted into a cup partially filled with water, the upper projecting portion of the sponge, which is kept damp by the Water, 'serving as an efficient pen-wiper until it becomes clogged with and hardened by the ink, when it is necessary to reverse the sponge in the cup in order to bring a fresh and soft portion of the same uppermost, and to soak out the ink from the portion which has been already used. This reversing operation unavoidably soils the fingers, as the inky sponge must be grasped by the saine-an objection which I have effectually overcome by the use of the band A, which serves as a holder, by which the sponge may be quickly and readily Withdrawn from the cup and reversed without touching the same with the fingers. The said band also imparts an ornamental finish to the cup, and it may be made of any material, and may be round, square, polygonal, or of any shape which Will accord with the character ofthe cup to which it is to be applied.
I claim as' my invention- A pen-Wiper in which a reversible spongeholding band, A, is adapted to and combined with a Water-vessel, B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' W. MOCONNELL.
Witnesses:
