JOHN P. CLARY VON CARLSBERG, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
PICTURE-HANGER.
Application filed April 4, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. CLARY VoN CARLSBERG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in picture hangers of that type embodying a plate so secured to a picture frame as to render the frame capable of being hung upon a wall directly upon a nail or other fastening means or the picture frame may be suspended from the nail or like fastening means by the use of a flexible element connected to the plate.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a hanger of the above character which will be simple in construction and cheap to manufacture and one which can be secured to any type of picture frame.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a hanger for picture frames constructed of a single piece of material and so constructed as to render it possible to secure the hanger to any type of picture frame in such a manner as to permit the picture frame to be supported upon the wall directly upon a nail or other fastener driven into the wall or suspended from this fastener by flexible means which has one end secured to the fastener and its free end removably associated with the hanger.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a hanger of the above stated character, which is provided with means whereby the hanger may be removably secured upon any type of picture supporting means now in general use.
With these general objects in view and others that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing, andthen claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary rear elevation Specification of Letters Patent.

thereto.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vcrti a] sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentaryrear elevation of the hanger illustrating the manner in which a flexible member may be associated with the frame and held against displacement by my improved hanger.
Fig. 4- is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of the same.
Fig. 5 illustrates another modified form of hangingthe picture with the use of flexible suspendingmeans.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a fragmentary portion of a picture frame of any desired construction and configuration and this picture frame is provided with a suitable molding 6 which molding is used for ornamentation purpose and to this molding my improved hanger 7 is adapted to be secured.
The molding is provided centrally in its rear side with a socket 8 which has its upper edge merging into a recess 9 which is concentric to the interior diameter of the socket.
My improved hanger comprises a diskshaped plate constructed of any suitable metal and is fastened in the recess 9 by the fastening means 10 such asrivets, nails or the like.
The body of the hanger plate 7 is provided with a semi-circular opening 11, the straight wall of which is provided with substantially key-hole slot 12 which is adapted to receive between its side walls and against its top wall the shank of a supporting fastener such as a nail or the like which is driven in the wall so that the picture frame may be readily hung thereon.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing description that a picture frame constructed in accordance with my invention and provided with this particular type of hanger plate may be readily hung upon the wall by positioning the head of the supporting fastener which is driven into the wall within the socket 8 of the molding through the semi-circular opening 11 and then permitting the shank of this supporting fastener to be moved into the opening 12 formed in this plate thereby holding the picture against shifting laterally in any direction when hung.
- In the modified forms shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the molding 6 is provided through its upper side with an opening 13 which communicates with a socket 14 formed in the rear side of the molding. A flexible element 15 is looped intermediate its ends and has its free ends knotted as at 17 thus when the looped end is passed up through the opening 13, the knot will engage the top wall of the socket llthus preventing its entire removal from its socket but leaving a sufficient length of the flexible memlber beyond the molding so that the picture may be readily hung or suspended from the supporting fastener which is driven into the Wall and upon the shank of which the loop of the flexible member is adapted to be Copies of this patent may be obtained for member is connected to the plate and the a socket formed centrally in the rear side of one portion thereof, the wall of the socket terminating into a concentric recess at the upper edge thereof, a disk-shaped hanger plate secured in said recess and being concentrically related to said socket, isaid plate being provided with a se'mi-circularropening, the straight wallof which i s'provided centrally with a vertical opening adapted to receive the shank of, a picture's'upporting fastener which is driven into a Wall whereby said picture may be readily hung thereon.
In testimony whereofI aflix my signature.
