Be it known that I, FRANK D. PELOT, citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Box-Lid Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cigar box lid holders and has as its object to provide a holder whichmay be readily applied to any cigar box and which will serve to hold the lid of the box in full open position or, in other words, against the rear side of the box so that it may serve as a support to hold the box in inclined position so that the cigars contained therein will be exposed in an attractive manner and so that the box may be more readily removed from a case in which it i kept with others of its kind.

Among other things the invention aims to so construct the holder that it may be applied to boxes the sides and lids of which are of various thicknesses, without liability of the members of the clip portion of the device being prung to project into the box in position to injure the wrappings' of the cigars therein.

Another aim of the invention; is to so construct the device that while it may be employed as a means for lifting the box out of the case and may be adapted to support a price tag, it will not embody any elements projecting any appreciable distance above the top of the box and in the way of other boxes removed from or placed in the cigar case.

The invention aims further to provide a cigar box lid holder, lifting device, and price tag holder, which may be readily and economically stamped in quantities from sheet metal without waste of material and without the necessity of assembling initially separated parts.

Another aim of the invent-ion is to so construct the price tag holding portion of the device that the tags may be readily placed therein and removed thereiron'i although not liable to become lost or displaced.

In the drawings the device is illustrated as including a shank l which is flat and which preferably has parallel lateral edges and this shank has stamped from ita gripping tongue 2 integrally connected with the shank near the upper end thereof by a portion 3. The portion8 preferably extends at right angles from one face of the shank l and the portion 2 extends downwardly from the outer end of the portion 3 and parallel to the plane of the shank l, as clearly. shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.

In order that the device when engaged with a cigar box in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, may be held against accidental displacement, the shank 1 is stamped to form a spur 5 which projects from the same side of the shank as does the portion 8 of the gripping tongue and which is de signed to bite into the lid of the box and become embedded therein, as shown in Fig. 2. It will be understood that when the device is grasped for the purpose of removing the box from a case, as will be presently explained, the upward pull upon the device will not result in its slipping from engagement with the rear side of the box and th'elid, for the.

Spur 5 will serve to prevent the same, the spur being directed upwardly at an angle to et-ter serve this purpose.

The shank 1 supports at its upper end a price tag holding head which is integral therewith and which comprises a plate portion 6 of a width greater than the width of the shank and this plate portion occupies a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the hank as will be apparent by reference to Fig. 2. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be noted that the upper end of the shank is equidistantly spaced from the ends or lateral edges of the plate portion 6 and in order that a tag supported beneath the plate may be exposed to View, the plate is formed with a sight opening 7 which may be of any desired size and outline In order that the price tag to be displayed may be supported, the forward and rear edges of the plate portion 6 are formed with relatively narrow flanges or lips 8 which are struck under in spaced relation to the under side of the plate portion in such manner that atag,

indicated in the drawings by the numeral 9, may be slipped into position at either end of the plate portion. The forward edge of the plate portion is formed with two of the flanges 8 located one at each side of the upper end of the hank 1. and the rear edge ot the plate portion is similarly formed with two of the flanges 8 located at corresponding points. The rear edge of the plate portion is further formed, between the flanges 8, with a finger piece 10 which curved downwardly and rearwardly and which .is spaced from the rear side of the shank l a sulhcient distance to permit 0*? the fin er piece eing readily grasped 'nen it is iesired to move the box to which the device is applied.

From the foregoing description of the invention it will be seen that there is provided an extremely simple and inexpensive box lid holding device adapted to hold the lid in such position that it will support the be); in inclined position; which is adapted to interchangeably support price tags; and which may be readily employed as a means for lifting the box into and out of a display case.

It will, furthermore, be apparent that by so proportioning the plate or holder 6 that its portions at opposite sides of the shank 1 will be of approximately one-half the width of the shank and by forming the ti: or pi ece ot a width substantially the same as that of the shank, the articles may be stamped without any appreciable waste of material from a sheet of metal.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

l. A box lid holder including a shank, a V 'ipping tongue carried by the shank and extending in spaced relation thereto, the shank being provided with a plate portion )late portion being provided at its opposite cages with flanges struck under to support a to beneath the said plate portion.

A box lid holder including a shank, a plate portion integral with the upper end of the shank, the plate portion at opposite sides of the shank and at that edge with which the shank is integral, being provided with struck under flanges and at its opposite side being novided with struck under flanges, and the said plate portion having a sight opening exposing a tag supported by the said flanges.

3. A box lid holder including a shank, a plate portion integral with the upper end of the shank, the plate portion at opposite sides of the shank and at that edge with which the shank is integral, being provided with struck under flanges and at its opposite side being provided with struck under flanges, and the said plate portion having a sight opening ei-iposing ta supported by the said flanges, the said plate portion between its laStJllQlb t-ioned flanges being provided with an in tegral finger piece extending below the plane thereof.

A box lid holder including a shank, a plate portion integral with the upper end of the shank, the plate portion at that edge with which the shank i integral being provided with a flange and at its opposite edge being provided with a flange, and a tag supported by said flanges, the said plate portion at the last-mentioned flange being provided with an integral finger-pieee extending below the plane thereof.
