Application filed December 8, 1821.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENNO Conn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented "certain new and useful improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boxes provided with covers held on the body by frictional engagement and it is my object to provide such boxes with means for easily opening the same, which means can be cheaply and easily stamped from sheet metal and then applied to the boxes without the use of tools,
In the drawing Fig. l is a top view of a box provided with my opening lever; Fig. 2 a side view with the top closed; Fig. 3 a side view with the top loosened for removal; and Fig. 4 a sectional view through the closed box and opening lever.
I have shown my invention applied to a box of the type known as coin opening in which a coin inserted between two beads or flanges can be twisted to separate the body and cover.
The box shown comprises a body 2 and a top or cover 1 which is a snug friction fit for the side walls of the body. As is common in coin opening boxes the body has an annular flange 3 which acts as a stop to prevent the cover being pushed too far onto the body.
The top 1 is provided with a flange 4' struck up from the lower edge so that upon inserting a coin between the flanges 3 and 4t and twisting it the cover is pried from the body.
My invention consists in providing the box with an opening lever so that by lifting on the lever the cover will be pried away from the body.
The opening lever comprises a piece of stamped sheet metal having a finger piece 5 which. is turned at, substantially right,

angles to the main portion, a shank portion (3 with an angular curve at 7 and ahead having cams .8 and 9 extending laterally therefrom.
The flange 4: on the cover is slotted longitudinally and the lever is slipped into the slot with the cams below the flange and lying snugly against the under side of the flange as is best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. lVhen the cover is on the body of the box the lower faces of the two cams abut the flange 8 on the body.
If now the lever be lifted, as shown in Fig. 3, the notch 10 formed by the junction of the cam 8 and the shank 7 will first fulcrum on the end of the slot and then the upper face of the cam 8 will contact with and roll along the under side of theflange 4 driving the cam 9 down against the flange 3 lifting the cover for easy removal.
If the lever be lost or pried loose the box can still be opened with a coin in the usual manner.
By this construction the expense and use of rivets or pivots for mounting the lever is obviated and the slots are formed in the process of manufacture of the cover and the only assembling operation is slipping the levers through the slots.
1 claim:-
A box comprising a body having an annular flange thereon. near the top, a cover provided with. a slotted flange near its lower end, said cover being a friction fit for the body, a lever in the slot comprising a finger piece adapted to lie above the slot, a head in angular relation to the finger piece, cams oppositely extending from the head and adapted to lie between the flanges on the cover and body the notches formed by the junctions of the cams and head adapted to fulcrum with the slot end and the cams adapted to roll along the opposed flanges.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
BENNO COHN.
