NITED STATES PATENT OEFIQE THOMAS B. LOGKWOOD, OF SMYRNA, DELAWARE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,365, dated July 29, 1873; application filed December 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. LocKwooD, of Smyrna, State of Delaware, have invented certain Improvements in VVeeding-Hoes, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to a weeding-hoe; and consists in improvements hereinafter described and afterward pointed out in the claim; and in order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing making a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a top view of my hoe, showing the blade on the eye. Fig. 2 is a top view of the blade. Fig. 3 is a view of the eye. Fig. 4 is a side section of the same. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the hoe.
The eye B is made with the shoulder or projection b, which rests upon the upper edge of the blade-plate A, and by this construction affords great strength to both the eye and the blade of the hoe, the two parts being brought in direct contact on the upper part of the blade, and thus the whole force of the blow given is transferred from the handle and eye of the hoe to the blade without the usual strain upon the rivets securing the parts together.
I also place the eye B under or behind the plate, as shown in Fig. 1, thus securing strength to the blade by the backing and support afforded by the lower portion of the eye. The plate A is to be cut or made from cast-steel or any other desirable material, while the eye B is made of malleable iron, and the two parts secured together by rivets, as shown in the drawing.
The eye is made of malleable iron, with rivets cast upon the inside face-the eye elongated in a vertical direction.
, Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hoe herein described, consisting of an elongated eye made of malleable iron, with a square shoulder on its inside face, and a blade fitted to said shoulder and secured by rivets to the eye-plate. as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' THOS. B. LOGKWOOD.
