Qnoeni'oz v UNITED I JOSEPH A. ALBERS, OFINOBWOOCD, OHIO. j

. An mation filed m 12',
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JosnrfiAgALnnns', a I
citizen of the United States of America, and
resident of Norwood, inthe county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a jCa-rton, of Which the following is a specification.
An objectof my invention is to provide a carton for combined packing and display purposes. V I I Another Object is to produce a carton provided with anjelement which actsto close the device or for holding it in adisplay position. i i fv These. an'dother objects are attained. by the means describedherein and disclosed in the accompanying drawing in which Fig; 1 isaplan view of an unassembled' blank embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is-an enlarged perspective view,
some parts being broken away of an assembled carton embodying my invention.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view-on reduced scale of a closed carton.
The carton body A comprises a top 6, front 0, bottom 03, andbacke. The cnumerated parts are-set off from one another by the scored line b, 0' and d. A cover. a attached to the top I) and is set off therefrom by the scored line ag The cover a and topb may be dispensed with if desired. "The tongue 7 is attached to the back a and is setotf there from by the scored line 6. When the cover a and top I) aredispensed with, the tongue is made of such size and shape that it will serve as a cover for the carton body. The sides gare attached to the top I) and are set off from the top by scored lines g and have the lugs g 9 lugs c are attached to the fronts and t are set off therefrom by the scorediline 0 the lug e? is attached to the back 6 and set Iofi? v therefrom by the scored lines A slot 6 is formed between'the top I) and the front 0 on the scored line bandaslot d is'formed in the bottom (I; The central part of the top b is punched out thereby forming a central perforation 6 The tongue f comprises a flange f, flap 7, lap f and'alug f. ,The flap is set off from the flange and the lap by thescored lines f and f respectively. The lug f is attached to the lap f and is set ofi' therefrom by the scored line 7. The lug f is adapted to pass through slots btand d The carton is set up as follows: p The front a is 'bent at right angles to the 1920. s r im. 395,501.
top turningon the scored line Z bottom d is then turned on the scored, line 0 and at right angles to the front a so that' it will he immediately below the top I). The back 6 is then bent toward the top turning upon the scored lined. The fiange '7" on' the tongue f is secured to the cover a; by any means, for example by being glued thereto. The lugs 0 and" e are then bent'toward one another,'turning upon the scored lines'c and 6 respectively. The sides 9 are-then bent downward over the lugs e and 0 and bent upon thetlin'es g. The lugs arebent upon-scoredlines g and are inserted between the top band thebottom (Z, engaging Snecification of Lctterslatent; :Paten ted Apr, 11, 1922.
ti'vely soithat they will lie over the top I) f carton. When the carton'isito be usedifor from the slot 77 the flap is bentfbackand will close the perforation b in the-* top. The lug f onthe end of the tongue is 1 J r inserted in the slot?) thereby closing the 80 display purposes the lug f is withdrawn u ward upon scoredline F, the lap f is bent} downward upon scored linef i The cover a and the tongue f arethenbentbackward upon scored lines a and e V respectively,
until-the lug f can be'mserted-ln the slot d in the bottom (Z, thereby causing the flap '7 and the lap f to perform the function of; legs or struts supporting the carton body inan inclined position.
The flap f besides serving as a strum-supports the cover at an angle to the top bfso that any advertising matter thereon will be heldup toviewformed upon them and set off byiscored lines The shoulders f formed onthe lap f engage the carton adjoiningl to the slot 6 therein;
" The weight of any "articles placedwithin l the carton when set up'for' displaywill be transmitted to the flap f and lap f of the f tongue, both of which act as legs and-cooperate insupportingthe carton in such posi- V tion. The shoulders f transmit some of the weight of the packed articles to the lap f andthe flange f transmits the balance-of such weight'to the flap P. The articles in thecarton bearing downward on. the lug f prevent the separationof the parts.
hat I claim is: v
1. The combination with a carton body of a cover, a tongue adapted in-one position to secure the cover in a closed position and in a second position to support the body of the of the carton at an angle and to support the cover at an angle to the top.
3. In a carton the combination of a body having a slotted bottom, a top and front having a slot between them, said front being lowermost when the box is in display posi tion, a tongue adapted either to be folded backward adjacent to the back of the carton or to be extended forward across the top, said tongue having a lug which isada-pted to enter the slot in the bottom to incline the carton body or to enter the slot between the top and the front and to hold the top closed.
4. In a carton the combinatian with a car.-
ton bod coin risin a erforated to) a y p C) 7 front, of a cover attached to the top and adapted to extend over the perforation in the top, and a tongue comprising a flange secured to the cover, a flap, attached to the flange, a lap attached to the flap, and a lug on the lap, the flap and lap being adapted to extend across the cover when the cover extends over the perforation in the top, and the lug being adapted to be inserted inthe slot between the top and the front and to secure the cover flap and lap upon the top, said flap, lap and lug beingalso adapted to be moved to a position to the rear and hot tom of the cartonbody, such flap and lap forming struts adapted to support the body in an inclined position, and to support the cover at an angle to and above the cover, the lug being adapted to be inserted in the slot in the bottom and to secure the parts in the aforesaid positions.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 3rd dayof July, 1920.
