Specification-of Letters Qatent.
Patented 21, 1922.
Application filed May 3, 1921. Serial .1120. ceasfiz.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Nxrnxnrn JMORRISON, of the town of Kaleida, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box Openers, of which the following is the specification.
The invention relates to improvements in box openers and particularly to an appliance provided on a tin box and utilized for parting the cover from the box bottom and an object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, inexpensive and durable device which when operated will positively separate the applied cover from the box body, thereby making it an easy matter to open a closed box.
A further object of the invention is to construct the device from a single piece and so that it will not get out of order and such that it will not interfere with the closing of the box from time to time.
With the above more important objects in view the invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter more particularly described and later pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a side view of a closed box equipped with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the box as it appears in the partially open position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view through the side of the box and showing the manner in which the rider rides the edge of the bottom of the box. 1
Fig. 4 is an enlarged side view of the lever or opener as it appears attached to the box cover, which latter is shown in vertical section.
Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 4.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention is particularly adapted for use on small metal boxes such as salve and ointment boxes, boot polish boxes and such like, which boxes present a bottom in which the material such as salve or ointment is placed and a cover for enclosing the contents. In equipping a metal box of this k e 'ir g fh an i ven n ake no c g whatever imthestructure,of the box.
Referring now to the drawmg'F- The bottom 1 of the box which is usually round is provided with a round cover 2. The sides of the box bottom are usually provided with a circumscribing rib 3 forming a seat for the sides of the cover which encloses the upper part of the box body. To the cover I attach my opener which is in the formof a lever 4 having one end pivotally secured to the side of the cover, the other end enlarged to form a head 5 and the body part fitted with an extending angularly positioned rider 6. When the box is closed, that is to say when the cover is applied on the box bottom, the lever has an inclined position as best shown in Fig. 1 and the rider is engaged with the u per edge of the box side (see Fi 3). ere it will be observed that the rider is actually in the form of a 'flat thin tongue bent upwardly to pass between the cover and the box and then downwardly within the box so as to hook over and ride the edge thereof. It is, however, particularly to be noticed that when the box is closed the lever is angularly positioned, whilst the part of the tongue or rider engaging the upper edge of the box is in full contact with the edge of the box and horizontally disposed- Accordingly it will be obvious that when the lower or head end of the lever is swung from the inclined position as shown in Fig. l to the vertical position as shown in Fig. 2 the rider or tongue which remains in contactwith the edge of the box will cause the top of the box to rise as the upper end of the lever is fast to the cover although pivoted at the fastening.
I have made the ivot fastening of the lever in a very simp e manner, such being by drilling a hole 7 in the cover and then extending the upper end of the lever through the hole and bending it downwardly.
From the above it will be apparent that this is a very simple and reliable device which is particularly positive in its action as the rider has a positive grip on the box and cannot become displacec when the lever is being turned.
In the accompanying claim I desire it to be understod that where I state box I mean the under part embodying the bottom and mediate of its} ength with an integralex tension projecting laterally and u wardlyv with respect to the leverto pass tween the telescoping edges of the cover and box and terminatin in a hook embracin the upper edge of t e box, the angular re ation between the lever and the extension being such that when the hook of the extension is flatly en aged with the upper edge of the box the ever will be inclined with respect to the vertical whereby upon moving the lever to. a true vertical position, opening movement of the cover will be effected by "an ular movement of the extension.
si ned at Kaleida, Manitoba, this 18th day of March, 1921.
