AND PAUL SALATA, OF NATRONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CURTAIN-POLE AND SUPPORT.
To all co 71 am "it may concern 'Be known that we, Gnonen SALATA and PAUL nil, citizens of Czecho-Slovakia, residing at Natrona in the county of Allegheny and State or" Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Pole and Shade Supports, 0: which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in curtain pole and shade supports and has particular reference to the provision of improved means for sup porting a curtain pole and a shade roller on a window frame without objectionable niarring of said frame. 1
The primary object of the invention is to provide a curtain pole and shade roller support including a horizontal bar adapted to restupon the upper edge of a window frame and having depending members at its ends adapted to engage the side edges of the winddw frame and having curtain pole and shade roller brackets fastened thereon so that the use of nails or screws for hangthe shades or curtains is rendered unnecessary and a rigid and durable attachment to the window frame is bad.
Another object is to provide a device of the above kind. wherein the horizontal bar is adjustable in len th to accommodate win dow "frames of varying sizes and whereby hanging of the curtains and shades may be quickly accomplished.
lVith the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of window frame equipped with a curtain pole and shade roller supporting bracket constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the curtain pole and shade roller supporting bracket shown in Fig. 1
Figure 3 is a top plan View of the device shown in Fig. 2, and
Figure at is an enlarged perspective view of the central portion. of the horizontal bar Specification of Letters Patent.

showing the adjustment retaining means for said bar. 7
Referring 'more in detail to the several news, the present invention embodies a horizontal bar composed of a pair of adjustably connected sections 5 and 6 and adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the window frame A as shown clearly in Fig. 1 and having rigid depending members 7 at its ends adapted to engage the adjacent portions of the side edges of said window frame as shown, said end members being provided with suitable shade roller supporting brackets 8 and curtain pole supporting brackets 9.
The end members 7 are preferably in the form of plates so that the curtain pole and shade roller brackets may be readily fastened thereto, and the bar sections 5 and 6 are preferably adjustably connected as shown clearly in Fig. 4. As shown in Fig. 4-, the section 5 is reduced as at 10 at its inner end while the bar section 6 is bifurcated to provide a pair of legs 11 between which said reduced portion 10 is slidably fitted. The adjacent ends of the sections 5 and 6 are also provided with substantially central longitudinal slots 12 and 13 respectively, and one end of a ratchet bar 14 which is positioned in said slots is fastened to the section 5 by means of a pin 15 or the like the ratchet teeth of the bar 14; being formedupon the upper edge of said bar and projecting above the upper surface of the latter. The ratchet bar 14 may be prevented from swinging downwardly out of the slots by means of a U-shaped member 16 which is fastened to the bar section 6 so as to extend beneath the slot 13 and upwardly on the sides or" said bar section as shown. The bar section 6 is provided with pair of ears 1? and one end of a catch 18 is pivoted to and between these ears as at 19 and extends toward the bar section 5 so as to engage under a spring keeper 20 carried by said bar section 6 and so as to be released. from said keeper whenever desired. The catch 18 is provided with a tooth as at 21 which is arranged to engage the ratchet teeth of the bar 14 when the catch 18 is engaged by the keeper 20, and thus an ciiicient means is provided for holding the bar sections 5 and 6 against accidental separation after the same has been snugly accommodated to the desired window "frame.
In operation, the catch 18 is sprung from beneath the keeper 20 and swung upwardly so as to disengage the teeth 21 from the teeth of the ratchet bar 14:, whereupon the bar sections 5 and 6 may be disposed upon the top of the window frame and adjusted to allow the end members 7 to depend at opposite sides of said window frame. The
bar sections 5 and 6 are then forced toward each other until the end members 7 contact the adjacent side edge portion of the window frame and when this takes place, the catch 18 is engaged beneath the keeper 20 so as to cause the teeth 21 to engage the ratchet teeth of the bar 14 and thereby prevent separation of said endmembers so as to effectively retain the device in position for supporting the curtain pole and shade roller respectively indicated at 22 and 23.
o It is believed that the construction and operationas well as the advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.
Minor changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as claimed.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A curtain pole or shade roller support of the class described embodying a horizontal barcomposed of a pair of sections adapt ed to rest upon the upper edge of avwindow frame and having rigid depending members at its ends adapted to engage the side edges of the-window frame, said end members being provided with supporting brackets, one of said bar. sections being reduced at its inner end, the other bar section being bifurcated at its inner end to provide. a pair of legs between which the reduced inner end of the other bar section is slidably fitted, said bar sections being provided with substantially central longitudinal slots in the adjacent ends of the same, a ratchet bar positioned in said slots and fastened to one of the bar sections with the ratchet teeth of said ratchet bar formed in the upper edge of the latter and projecting above the upper surfaces of said bar sections, the other of said bar sections being provided with a pair of keeper for said catch carried by the at its ends adapted to engage the side edges of the window frame, said end members being provided with supporting brackets, one of said bar sections being reduced at its inner end, the other bar section being bifurcated at its inner end to provide a pair of legs between which the reduced inner end of the other bar section is slidably fitted, said bar sections being provided with substantially central longitudinal slots in theadjacent ends of the same, a ratchet bar positioned in said slots and fastened to one of the bar-sections with the ratchet teeth of'said ratchet bar formed in the upper edge of the. latter and projecting above the upper surfaces of said bar sections, the other of said bar sections being provided with a pair of cars, a catch pivoted between said ears, a spring keeper for. said catch carried by said other bar section, said catch having a tooth arranged to engage and disengage the ratchet teeth of the ratchet bar when the catch is swung toward or away from said bar sections respectively, said ratchet bar being pivoted at one end to one of the bar sections, and a U-shaped member carried by the other bar section supporting the free endof said ratchet bar. 1 1
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
