Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 21, 1921. Serial No. 446,751.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, LEONARD CLAYTON RIDGE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of 1411 Royal Bank Bldg, in the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Filing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in filing apparatus as described in the present specification and shown in the accompanying drawings that form a part of the same.

The invention consists essentially ofthe novel means employed for securing a tab to an index card.-

The objects'of the invention are to provide a form of tabfor use in connection with card index systems of the kind in which a card is adapted to be elevated from its normal position for perusal, capable of gripping the card so rmly as to eliminate all danger of displacement in relation to the elevating mechanism, to provide a tab which while possessing great gripping propensities will not cover a. great area of the face of the card, and generally to provide a device of this character which will be cheap to manufacture, efficient and durable.

In the drawings Figurel is a plan view of an index card and a tab secured thereto.

Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through a portion of a card, said section being taken on the line AA of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the tab shown in Fi ure 1.

Figure 4 is a plan view of the tab shown in Figure 3 prior to the turning up of the clamping lugs.

Figure 5 is an enlarged perspective view Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various figures.

Referring to the drawings 1 is an index card having a portion along its lower edge divided vertically into indexspaces 2 adapted to contain index characters 3.

4 is a metal tab adapted to be secured to' the card 1 in such a manner that the slotted end 5 will project outwardly therefrom in a direct line with the index character under which the card is indexed, for engagement by suitable elevating mechanism, (the construction of said elevating mechanism not being shown in-the drawings). The tab 4 is formed up from a single piece of material having one or more pointed extensions or fingers 6 from opposite sides thereof adapted to be projected through correspondingly scored portions 7 of the card 1 and to be turned downwardly to firmly clasp the card.

It must of course be understood that the fingers 6 may be of any desired shape and may be projected from any desired portion of the tab as shown in Figures 3, 5 and 6.

In the use of this invention the fingers 6 of a tab are first turned at right angles and Patented Feb. 14, 1922.

are then forced through the scored portions 7 of the card 1 and turned downwardly on the face of the card.

It will be seen that this form of tab does not encroach on the adjacent index spaces thus permitting of a separate tab being placed on each index space if desirable.

What I claim is In filing apparatus, in combination, a card having index spaces along the lower edge thereof, and a tab having integral extensions therefrom adapted to be projected through said card and turned downwardly to secure said tab with one end thereof projecting from the desired index space, said card being-scored to correspond to the relative positions of said extensions.
