Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
CLINTON VAN BUBEN REEDEB, OF SAN JOSE, GALIFORNIA- IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTCMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,540, dated July 1, 1873 application filed May 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLINTON VAN BUREN REEDER, of San J os, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, haveinventeda new and valuable Improvement in Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of my bed-bottom on a plan view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the hooks used in the same.
Like letters of reference in the several figures'indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a wire-suspension bed -bottom, as will be hereinafter more'fully set forth; and, in order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a box-frame of any suitable dimensions, strengthened and braced by means of cross-bars B B. O 0 represent the springs, which are made of suitable wire, and in double-spiral form that is, they are wider at both ends and narrowerin the center. These springs are all connected together and to the frame at both ends, by means of hooks a a, as shown, the hooks which connect with the frame A bein g hooked into eye screws or staples b b fastened in the frame. The springs O (l are further connected together and to the frame A at the middle by means of hooks b b, which hold the springs plumb and in 'an upright position.
This forms a complete wire suspension vibrating-spring bed-bottom, the springs being all suspended, having perfect elasticity, and yet strong and firm to support the weight for which it is intended.
The wire hooks a (l, and b b I contemplate making in the manner shown in Fig. 3--that is, having a twist or bead in them, thereby in creasing their spriugy or elastic quality.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- i The bed-bottom herein described, consisting of the box-frame A, having the staples I), the bracedcross-bars B, and the double-conical spiral spriu gs 0, connected together and to the frame at both ends and middle .by the hooks a and I), which hold the springs mainly in an uprightposition, as shown and described.
