Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIoE- SAMUEL B. MUNSON, JR., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CiARBAGvE-TUBS Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,527, dated July 1, 1873,' application tiled June 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ySAMUEL B. MUNsoN, Jr., of Chicago, in the county of Cook and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage- Tubs 5 and do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved utensil. Fig. 2' is a plan view ot' the lower side of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical central section upon line :c x ot' Fig. 2.
-Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the ligures.
The object of my invention is to produce a garbage-tub which, while possessing great strength and durability, shall be ot' light weight and easily handled; and it consists, as a new article of manufacture, in the garbagetub constructed substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specilied.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the tub, constructed of or from eorrugated'sheet metal, and having the general form ot' a cylinder. The upper and lower ends ofthe utensil are protected and strengthened by means of two encircling metal bands, B and C, resptetively, the lower one of which, C, extends downward for about three-fourths ot' an inch below the side walls, and within the space thus Vformed is placed a wooden bottom, D, which is covered upon its upper side with plane sheet metal d. The bottom D is secured in position by means of nails driven horizontally inward through the sides of the tub, and is strengthened by two strips of iron, E, which are attached to said sides, and extend beneath said bottom, crossing each other at a right angle, as seen in Fig. 2. rI he addition ot' suitable handles F completes the utensil, which is pret'- erably painted, for the purpose of more perfectly closing the `joints, and to protect the metal from oxidization.
The utensil described possesses such strength as to enable it to withstand without injury the rough usage usually given to such articles, while from the peculiar construction of its parts but slight weight is required, so that said article is as readily handled as are those constructed wholly from wood.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim is- As a new article of manufacture, the hereinbetore-described garbage-tub A, constructed of or from corrugated sheet metal, provided with the metal bands B and C, wooden bottom D, metal bottom d, and handles F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
-In testimony that I. claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of June,l 1873.
SAlWIUEL B. MUN SON J It.
