Description

T. H. KANE.
Ash-Barrels.
No. 134,145. Patented Dec. 24, 18-72.
ri n:
AM PHOTU-LITHUGIFAPH/L CQMLYUSEGENE PROCESS.
UNITED STATES THOMAS H. KANE, OF NEW YORK, Y.
IMPROVEMENT l N ASH-BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,145, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. KANE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Ash-Barrels, of which the following is'a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide for cheap, strong, and lasting incombustible ashbarrels.
In order to describe my invention more fully I refer to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
Figure I is a side view of a round ash-barrel embodying my invention. Fig. II is a side view of a triangular ash-barrel embodying my invention. Fig. III is a plan view of Fig. I. Fig. IV is a plan view of Fig. II.
A is an ash-barrel constructed of light sheetiron or other suitable metal. B is a casing or guard, made of iron or wood, of size and form to receive the barrel, which may be made round, square, triangular, or of any desired shape.
The barrel A is fastened to the casing B by bending the rim or upper part a of the barrel down and around the upper part of the casing c, which, at the same time, forms a fastening for the handles or rings 0. The
barrel is made somewhat shorter than the casing in order to prevent the barrel from reaching the ground, and thus be damaged by dampness, water, dirt, or be knocked against the pavement or other places where it is put. The casing B serves to preserve the barrel against damage by being knocked against the ash-carts and rough handling generally, at the same time admitting the barrel to be constructed of lighter material than would otherwise be practicable.
The casin g is formed with a view to strength and lightness, and may be cheaply and conveniently made of cast-iron, wrought-iron, or wood, in the form shown or in any other fancy or ornamental form or design.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- An ash-barrel, A, with rim to and handle 0, in combination with the casing or guard B, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
THOS. H. KANE.
