Description

G. H. BINGER.
VISE SPREADER,
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 19. 1921.

1 sus'rav Hi B tters, Gnome-l mmas;
fvisn sPREADER. v
Substitute for application Serial To all whom it may concermi Be it known that I, GUs'rAv-H. BINGER,
a citizen'of the .United States, residing at Topeka, in the countyof Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vise Spreaders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bench vises, and the primary object of the invention is to provide simple means to engage with the guide bar below the screw adjusting member for the vise which will be automatic in its action to hold the said bar at a desired longitudinal adjustment with respect to the carpenters bench, so as to facilitate in the engagement of articles of different sizes between the jaws of the vise.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a vise for carpenters benches wherein the lower or guide bar thereof passes through a suitable opening or slot in the bench, the said bar being provided with a toothed or ratchet edge that is designed to be engaged by a gravity influenced bolt, and whereby the outward movement of the vise with respect to the bench will not be hindered by the said bolt but whereby the inward movement of the said bar will be prevented by the said bolt, the bolt being bodily movable in a longitudinal direction as well as susceptible to movement in a vertical direction, whereby when pressure is brought thereon, it will be elevated above the rack, and permit of the free movement of the said rack through the slot or opening in the bench.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: 7
Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating the application of the improvement.
figure 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 and upon a greatly enlarged scale.
Figure 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the corner post of the bench provided with the improvement.
The bench 1 may be of the ordinary construction, and in the drawings I have illus- Specification of LettersPatent. Patented J an, 31, 1922, No. 358,406, filed February 13, 1920. T his application 'filed September "19,1921. Serial N0. 50 1;s34.-: Y
trated on e of the corner posts Qthereof as provided adjacent its lower end with an elongated opening 3. This opening is adaptedto receive-theordinary guide bar 4 which Is pivotally secured to the lower endof the vise member 5, the said vise adjacentthe head thereof being provided with the usual opening receiving the non-threaded portion of an adjusting screw 6, the said screw having its threaded shank received in a nut member secured in any desired manner to the bench or let into the corner post 2 thereof. The screw has its outer end provided with the usual socket having the slidable handle 7 whereby to swing the jaw of the movable member of the vise toward or away from the stationary member which is arranged upon the bench.
The guide bar 4 is adapted to pass through the opening 3 in the post 2, in the usual manner, but in the present instance the guide 1 3 and approximately in a'line with the upper edge of the said opening are secured a pair of bracket members 99. Each of the brackets is provided with a central ofl'set portion 10, the lower wallof which being angular, as at 11, and these angular walls 11 are adapted to engage with the angular surfaces 12 and 13 respectively, in a gravitational influenced bolt member 1 The lower edge of the bolt 14: opposite the inclined portions 12 and 13 thereof are straight, and the upper edge is provided with a central enlargement 15 forming the same with a shoulder 16, and this shoulder is adapted to contact with the inner edge of one of the bracket members 9, when the bolt is moved longitudinally by pressure of the foot of the operator upon the widened end 17 thereof. The contacting engagement between the shoulder 18 provided between the angular surface 13 and the lower edge ofthe bolt memberl l contacting with the inner face of one of the bracket or keeper members 9 limits both the downward and the longitudinal movement of the bolt 14 in one direction. The bolt 14 is designed to gravitate to contact with one of the shoulders 9 of the rack bar, when the said rack bar is drawn outwardly from the bench, and by virtue of such contact, will prevent the inward movement of the said bar.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In combinationwith a member having an opening therein through which a toothed rack member is arranged for movement, of brackets secured to the said member to the opposite sides of the opening therein, each of said brackets having a central offset portion the lower wall of which being disposed at an inclination, and the inclined portions of each of said brackets being in the same direction, a flat bolt movable through the brackets having its lower edge provided with spaced angle notches designed to coengage with the angle portions of the brackets and its upper edge provided with 7 an enlargement forming a shoulder designed to contact with one of the brackets to limit the longitudinal movement of the bolt, when pressure is exerted on one end thereof and the angle surfaces of the bolt are thus caused to travel over the angle surfaces of the brackets to raise the bolt to position above the teeth of the rack member and said bolt designed to gravitate downwardly of the brackets when such pressure is released.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
