To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH LANG, a citizen of the Empire of Germany, residing at Mannheim, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Support for Ratchet-Wrenches and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
There are known adjustable 'L-shaped supports for ratchet wrenches and the like, which'supports are combined with clamps for fastening their feet on the work-pieces, so that the clamp being attached to the support can not get lost or mislaid. i/Vith such supports the screw-spindle of the clamp is disposed parallel to the vertical middle portion of the 'L-shaped support and is arranged to bear on the foot of the support similar to the screw-spindle of an ordinary clamp which is applied to the foot of a 'L-shaped support.
My invention relates to an improvement in such adjustable supports whereby the support is rendered more reliable and. can be better fastened on the work-piece than hitherto. The improvement consists in disposing the screw-spindle in the central line of the vertical middle portion of the L-shaped support, this vertical portion being provided with a gap, so as to leave space for the internally screw-threaded end of the clamp.
I will now proceed to describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the new adjustable support applied to awork-piece shown in section, and Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section through the same on the line A-B in Fig. 1, the work-piece being omitted.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts in both views.
The support S is shown as cast in one piece with the foot 1 and the arm 2 and provided in its vertical middle portion with a gap 3. The upper part 4 of its vertical portion is made tubular for the reception of a screwspindle 5, which can be introduced from above and is adapted to bear with its lower end on the bottom of a recess 6 provided in the foot 1. Where so preferred, the screwspindle 5 may be prevented from longitudinally shifting by a forked piece 7 which engages in a neck 8 at the head 9 and is secured by means of a screw 10 or otherwise. The head 9 may be provided with a cross hole 11 through which a pin or the like (not shown) can be passed for turning the screw-spindle 5. agonal or square so that it can be turned by means of a screw-key or the like. The support S is supplied with a U-shaped clamp C of any known construction, the upper internally screw-threaded end 12 of which fits on the screw-spindle 5 within the gap 3. The lower free end 13 of the clamp C is shown as provided with a recess 1.4, in which the balllike end 15 of a known adjustable holding plate 16 engages and is secured by means of two parallel pins 17, 17 or the like. The holding plate 16 is on its upper surface serrated or toothed in order to better get hold of the work-piece 18. From an inspection of Fig. 2 it will be evident, that the holding plate 16 can adapt itself to the varying in clination of the lower surface of the workpiece 18.
The adjustable support is operated as follows: The head 9 of the screw-spindle 5 is turned in the respective direction so as to permit the work-piece 18 to engage between the foot 1 and the holding plate 16, and the foot 1 is applied to the respective surface of the work-piece 18, after which the head 9 is turned to-fasten the support S on the workpiece 18. here so preferred, an ordinary clamp may be applied for fastening the free end of the foot 1 (in Fig. 1 on the right) on the work-piece 18, so as to prevent the support S from turning around the axis of the screw-spindle 5. A ratchetwrench (indi cated by dotted lines in Fig. 1) of any known construction or any other tool can be then inserted between the work-piece 18 and the arm 2 and operated in the usual manner.
It is obvious, that the chief advantage of the new adjustable support consists in the reduction of the distance between the screwspindle 5 and the ratchet-wrench or the like, so that the whole length of the foot 1 can be utilized as a lever for preventing the arm 2 from turning upwards. Thus the new support is rendered more reliable and safe than the known adjustable supports and the ordinary L-shapd supports.
The new adjustable support described may be varied in many respects without departing from the spirit of my invention. It may be forged or formed in a press in which case its shape may be modified in any man ner obvious to any one versed in the art to which this invention appertains. The forked piece 7 may be omitted, so that the screw-spindle 5 may be longitudinally moved. This is useful for rapidly exchangto bear With ing the clamp C for another one, should the workpiece require it. The adjustable holding plate 16 may be replaced by any known equivalent means.
claim:
1. In an adjustable support for ratchet- Wrenches and the like, the combination With a 'L-shaped support adapted to be applied With its foot to the Work-piece, of a screwspindle in the vertical portion of said sup port, and a U-shaped clamp fitting with its one end on saidscrew-spindle and adapted its other end on the workpiece for fastening thereon said support.
2. In an adjustable support for ratchet- Wrenches and the like, the combination With a 1-shaped support having a gap in its vertical portion and adapted to be applied With its foot to the Work-piece, of a screw-spindle in the vertical portion of said support and passing through its gap, and a clamp fitting With its one end on said screw-spindle in the gap of said support and adapted to bear With its other end on the Work-piece for fastening thereon said support.
3. In an adjustable support for ratchet- Wrenches and the like, the combination With a support comprising a recessed middle portion, a foot and an arm at the ends of the middle portion on opposite sides, of a screwspindle turnable in the middle portion of said support and passing through the recess and adapted to press the foot on the work-piece,

4. In an adjustable support for ratchet- Wrenches and the like, the combination With a support comprising a recessed middle portion, a foot and an arm at the ends of the middle portion on opposite sides, of a screw spindle turnable in the middle portion of said support and passing through the recess for pressing the foot on the Work-piece, a clamp having its one end provided with an internal screw-thread for fitting on said screw-spindle in the recess of said support, and means at the other end of said clamp'for bearing on the Work-piece and thus fastening thereon said support, the arm of said support being adapted to support the ratchet-wrench or the like.
