CHAIN PIPE-VISE OR"lIi-IE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent. I
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
Application filed December 27, 1911. Serial No. 668,059.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GEORGE AMBoRN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chapinville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Chain Pipe-Vises or the Like, of which the following is a specification. e I
In the common form of chain pipe vise two jaws are provided which are formed with working faces adapted to engage the pipe, the latter being held against the working faces by a chain passing around the ipe. It is usual to provide the bed plate of the structure with a lock or locks deend of the chain while mechanism adapted to tighten the chain.
According to the present invention I pro vide a vise in which one end of the chain is fixedly secured to the bed plate of the the other end being adapted to be looked as is usual. The adjustments for tighteffected by a bodily the latter being conbed plateby a pivadapted to persuitable take-up movement of the jaws, nected at one end to the otal connection which is mit theaws to rock. Any
mechanism is provided,preferably a screw,
which operates against the under side of the jaws- The invention includes certain other improvements which will be here-inafter referred to.
- Referring to the drawings which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is an end elevation of the vise. Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
Referring to the drawings, let A indicate a suitable bed plate, B B. the'jaws having working faces G, and D a, chain adapted clamp the same of the chain D upon the aws. One end,
is preferablyfixed to the bed plate, preferably by a pin E which passes throughlugs F F formed on or carried by the bed plate.
The opposite slde of the bed plate is provided with a locker locks G G designed to adjustably engage the free end of the chain D. According to the present invention the chain is tightened on the ,pipe by a tilting movement of the jaws. For this purpose the jaws are pivotally connected with the bed plate, which may be conveniently done in the present structure by means of the pin E which is extended beyond the lugs F F gages a sufiicientdistance to engage the jaws. The take-up device for moving the jaws is preferably in the form of a screw H which en-. g a screw-threaded hole J formed in the bed plate. In order that a single screw may tilt both jaws, the latter are fixedly connected together in any suitable manner,
as for instance that shown wherein each jaw is formed with a laterally extending portion 'K or K, the inner faces of which abut.
The jaws are clampedtogether by a pin or bolt L passing through the bodies of the jaws and the extensions K K. The upper end of the "screw J in the construction shown engages the under faces of the abutments K K, and tilts the jaws upwardly around the pivot pin E, thus moving the pipe inan upward direction and clamping it against the chain D. The screw J may be turned by a lever or handle M or by any othersuitable device. e a
While I have shown and described one form of the invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto, as various changes may be made therein wi hout departing from the spirit of the invention. The jaws may be connected with the bed plate in any desired manner so as to be capable of tilting upon the connection. The take-up mechanism may be variously constructed to secure the requisite movements of the jaws. .Other changes of like character may be made ,In my application even date herewith I have describedand claimed broadly theuse of-a movable jaw,
the present application being based specifically on the tilting of the jaw.
What I claim is:- 1. In a chain pipe vise or the like, a jaw,
a chain, said jaw being mounted to tilt, and
means for tilting the jaw.
2. In achain pipe vise or the like, a jaw pivoted at one side, a chain, and means for tilting the jaw around its pivot.
3. In a chain pipe vise or the like, a bed plate, a jaw pivoted to said bed plate, a chain connected with said bed plate, and means for tilting the jaw around its pivot. 4. In a chain pipe vise or the like, a bed plate, ajaw pivoted thereto, a chain, and means engaging the under side of the jaw for tilting the latter around its pivot.
5. In a chain pipe vise or thelike, a bed plate, a pair of jaws pivoted thereto, a
chain connected to said bed plate between No. 668,063 filed on i said jaws, a lock for the free end of said chain, and a screw passing through said bed plate and hearing against the under sides of said jaws.
6. In a chain pipe Vise or the like, a bed plate, a pair of lugs carried by said bed plate, a chain fixed between said lugs, a pair of jaws on the out-er sides of said lugs, a pin passing through said jaws and lugs, and a screw operating against the under signed my name in the presence of two sub- SCIlblIlg witnesses.
