BORING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,830, dated February 26, 1895. Application filed December 1'7, 18 94. Serial No. 532,076. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT S. Hoen,acitizen of the United States, residing at Wise, in the county of Wise and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Boring-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in boring machines and is more particularly an improvement in that class of said machines which are used for wood boring.
My said invention consists in certain novelty in the construction, arrangement and combinationof the various parts all of which I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a boring machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the clamping device for securing the machine to the material to be bored, and Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are details of various parts of my said invention.
Referring to said drawingsthe letter A indicates the frame of the machine which is formed of a continuous metal bar bent to conform substantially to the shape of an ordinary brace, and having a straight section a and upper and lower parallel arms I), b. On the end of the lower arm and projecting at right angles therefrom and parallel with the straight section a of the frame, is formed a yoke B provided with trunnions O.
' D is a suitable base having formed thereon two flat upright curved supports or plates E provided with bearings e, in which'are mounted the trunnions O, and by means of which the frame is pivoted or hinged to said base. In the bottom of the base is formed an oblong opening F through which the bit of the boring device passes when the machine is in operation.
G is a semi-circular slot in one of the supports E.
H is a threaded pin or bolt secured to one arm of the yoke, which pin or bolt passes through the slot G.
I is a clamping thumb nut on the pin or bolt, by means of which the frame can be secured at any angle to the base and thus regulate the angle at which the hole will be bored. Said support or plate is provided with agraduated scale 9 and on the yoke isa pointer, indicated by the arrow 2', by means of which the angle of boring can be adjusted with the greatest accuracy.
K is the bit-brace which is of the ordinary form and construction and is provided with the handle and swiveled head or rest L. Said head L has a longitudinal opening Z through which the upper end of the brace extends. The upper end of the brace is provided with a female screw Z in which is screwed the lower end of an extension or rod M which is mounted in a bearing N in the end of the upper arm of the frame and is free to move longitudinally in said bearing.
0 is a swiveled head or rest on the upper end of the extension or rod M. m is an annular recess in said head which permits it to have a limited longitudinal movement on the rod. When pressure is applied to the head or rest 0 the rod is permitted to turn freely, as the machine is operated. On the upper end of the rod M is formed across piece or catch 7% which is adapted to engage with diametrical grooves 0 in the bottom of the annular recess. Now when it is desired to attach or detach the extension or rod from the bit-brace, the swiveled head or rest 0 is drawn out until the catch or cross piece engages with the grooves o and the head is held fixed upon the rod, which can then be turned to the right or left thus enabling the rod to be screwed on or olf the brace.
On the end of the lower arm of the bit-brace I form a bit socket so constructed that bits of any size may be used and accurately centered. This socket is constructed and arranged as follows: To the end of the lower arm P of the brace is secured a stationary jaw R and a slidingjaw R operated by a set screw S. 'llhejaw R is provided with a recess T in which is mounted an adjustable block t adjusted by a set screw 25'. The faces of the jaws and the adjustable block are provided with tapering V-shaped grooves s.
s are guiding pins in the jaw R on which the adjustable block is mounted and which prevent the same from being twisted.
R is a centering seat on the lower side of the arm P of the bit-brace, with which the head of the shank of the bit engages.
By this construction a bit of any size can be secured in the socket and accurately centered so that the longitudinal center of the bit will be brought directly in line with the center line of the bit socket, bearing in the upper arm of the frame and extension of the bitbrace.
V is a coiled spring surrounding the extension and seated on the upper arm of the frame.
V is a pivoted latch which holds the spring compressed. Said latch is provided with an outer beveled face 1;.
W is an adjustable stop secured on the extension or rod M by a set screw w. This stop is set to regulate the depth of boring, the extension being'provided with a graduated scale 1.0 When the hole has been bored nearly the desired depth the stop engages the beveled face of the latch and forces it out of engagement with the spring, thus releasing said spring and causing it to reinovethe bit and shavings from the hole bored. The boring it will be seen is stopped at the moment thelatch is released and the stop comes in contact with the spring.
On the base of the frameI form two parallel flanges D having notches (1 D are two parallel bars having three or more annular recesses 01 which engage with the notches 01 the bars being held on the base by a set screw or bolt d and retaining plate Said bars are provided with arms at arranged at right angles thereto and in which are mounted clamping screws 01 which engage. the sides of the material to which it is desired to attach the boring machine. The bars being adjusted to accommodate the width of the beam or piece to be bored render it unnecessary to have long clamping screws as the device can be used with material of any width.
The operation of my improved boring machine will be readily understood.
The bit is first centered and the machine clamped upon the material to be bored. The adjustable frame is then set at the required angle and the machine operated in the ordinary manner. When the adjustable stop on the extension strikes the retaining latch of the spring said spring is released, the boring stopped and the bit and shavings drawn out of the hole by the operation of said spring. By removing the extension or rod M the bitbrace can be removed from the frame and used as an ordinary brace and bit. I am thus enabled to produce a combined toolwhich will be found of great use and which when the parts are all assembled forms a boring machine possessing many advantages.
My improved boring machine is of the simplest construction and cannot readily get out of order while at the same time it fills the place of the more complicated class of boring machines.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
1. In a boring machine, the combination with the base, the adjustable frame pivoted to said base and provided with a bearing in its upper end, of the bit-brace having the removable extension .or rod secured to its upper end and mounted in the bearing in the frame, and the adjustable stop mounted on the extension of the bit-brace, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a boring machine, the combination with the base, the adjustable frame pivoted to said base-and provided with a bearing in its upper end, of the bit-brace provided with the removable extension secured to the upper end of the brace and mounted in the bearing in the frame, the adjustable stop mounted on the extension, the spring secured on the up per end of the frame and the retaining latch adapted to hold the spring compressed and be released as the stop engages the same, all constructed, arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
3. In a boring machine, the combination with the bit-brace having the swiveled head or rest L the female screw Z in its upper end, of the screw threaded extension or rod M engaging the female screw Z, and provided on its upper end with a swiveled head 0 having an annular recess 'm and diametrical grooves 0, and the cross piece m on said extension adapted to engage the said grooves 0, substantially as shown and described for the purpose set forth.
4. In a boring machine, the combination with the base having the curved supports E, the segmental slot G in one of said supports and a graduated scale thereon, of the adjustable frame pivoted to the base, and provided with a clamping pin engaging the segmental slot and having a clamping nut, and a hearing formed in the upper end of the frame, of a bit-brace provided with a removable extension M mounted in the bearing in the frame and having a graduated scale on said extension, the adjustable stop mounted on the extension and the spring V mounted on the frameand having the retaining latch pivoted to the frame and having the beveled outer face, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a boring machine, the base E carrying the frame and provided with the parallel flanges D having notches d ,in combination with the transversely adjustable bars D having a series of annular recesses d and adapted to engage the notches d and provided with. arms d and clamping screws, and the bar and set screw holding the bars on the base, substantially as shown and described.
