Be it known that I, LILLIAN KROUPA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Berwyn, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Attachments for Beds, of which the following is a specification. Y

My invention relates to attachments for beds, particularly designed for hospital use, and it has for its principal object the provision of an improved structure by which the head and body of a patient can be supported in adjusted position, and which can be employed as a table inconvenient position with respect to a patient either sitting up or reclining in the bed.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Specification of Letters Patent.

ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS.

Referring to the drawings, 15 indicates the head frame of a bed supporting side bars 1G in the usual well-known manner. A cross bar 17 in the form ol an angle iron is secured across the framework of the bed in fixed position thereon, being mounted in position with the horizontal iiange lowermost as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 or with a horizontal flange at the top as is shown in Figs. and 6. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, brackets 18 and 19 are adjustably and detachably mounted upon the cross bar 17, such brackets being slotted at their lower ends as is best shown in Fig. 2, to fit snugly upon the flange of the angle bar, being secured in position by means of set screws 20, as is indicated in dotted lines in F ig. 1. A spacing block 21 in the form of' a long upper ends ofthe brackets 18 and 19, and a bolt 22 extends through the ends of the brackets and through the sleeve 21 for securing such parts rigidly in position with respect to each other. Arms 23 and l24 are mounted upon the end portions of the bolt 22, the lower ends of the arms being provided with radially extending grooves, as is best shown in Fig. 7, the grooves of the arms being adapted to co-operate with similarly formed grooves in the upper end portions of the brackets 18 and 19 for holding the arms in adjusted position with respect to the brackets. A spacing block 25, also in the form of a sleeve, is interposed between the upper ends of the arms 23 and 24.r a bolt 26 being employed passing through the ends of the arms and through the spacing sleeve for holding the arms in fixed position with respect to the sleeve.

27 and 28 by means of brackets 30 and 31 which are secured vupon the back of the panel 29 and are connected to the upper ends of the arms by means of a bolt 32, a spacing block 33 sleeve is interposed between the v the form of a sleeve being interposed between the brackets 30 and 31 as 1s shown 1n Fig. 1.v The upper ends of the

27 and 28, and the outer faces Vof the brackets 30V and 31 are provided with radially extending teeth for holding the panel 29 in adjusted yposition when the bolt 32 is tightened for I that purpose.

By the use of the construction Vabove described, I am enabled to hold the panel '29 in position as illustrated in solid lines in Fig. 2, or in the position as shown in dotted lines in said figure, or in any other of a great'varietyof positions. In this way the anel 21 can be adjusted to meet the varying requirements of the patient. By the use ofL the slotted brackets 2O for mounting the attachment upon the framework of the bed,

While I have illustratedand described the preferred form of construction for` carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without, departing vfrom the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do notA wish to be limited to the precisedetails of construction set forth', but desire to vavail myselfof suchY variations and: modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

'Anattachment for bedscomprising a .pair` ofl brackets, means for; detachably mounting said brackets on the framework of a bed, a spacing block interposed between said brackets, a bolt passing through the brakets, a pair of arms secured upon said brackets by said bolt and tightened in adjusted position thereon at opposite ends of the spacing block, a panel pivotally mounted on said arms, and means for holding said panel in adjusted position With respect to said arms.

An attachment for beds comprising a pair of brackets, means for detachably mounting said brackets on the framework of a bed, arms supported from said brackets and pivotally mounted with respect thereto, a spacing block interposed between the upper ends or' said arms, a bolt passing through said arms for tightening them upon saidV spacing block, a panel, and toothed bearing brackets secured to said panel, said brackets being mounted on said bolt and engaging' said arms by means of radial teeth for holding the panel in adjusted position with respect to said arms.

4. An attachment for beds comprising a v panel, arms pivotally mounted on said panel,

means for pivotally mounting said arms on the frame of a bed, said arms being adapted to be buckled, and means for holding said arms in adjusted position, the arrangement being such that by the adjustment of said arms the position of the panel can be changed in either a vertical direction or in the direction longitudinally of the bed indepeidently of any other movement of the pane 5, An attachment for beds comprising a panel, a pair of arms pivotally mounted on said panel, means for holding said arms in adjusted position with respect to the panel, bolts passing through the ends of said arms, a second pair of arms pivotally mounted on said bolts and held thereby in adjusted position, and means for mounting said secondnamed arms pivotally in position on a bed and for holding said second-named arms in adjusted position with respect to the bed, said panel being adapted to be supported by said arms either in raised diagonal position for supporting the patient or in horizontal position in front of the body of the patient.
