BERNARD H. EDWARDS, OE SPRING HOPE, NORTH CAROLXNA.
BED EXTENSON.
Application filed 29,
Be it known that BERNARD H. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Spring` Hope, in the county of Nash and State of North Carolina, has invented new and useful Improvements in Bed Extensions, of which -the following is a specification.,
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient construction of extension for bedsteads of the conventional type whether of the iron or wooden construction which may readily be exposed for use or moved into a position beneath l' and within the contour of the bedstead when not required and which will aiiord a substantial enlargement on the etiective area of the structure; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preterred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein `Figure 1 is a perspective view in outline ot a bedstead extension applied in the operative position to a conventional bedstead.
Figures 2 and 3 are cross sectional views showing the extension respectively in the folded and the extended positions.
Figure l is a detail view of a portion oi the frame 12.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the iframe 12 and one of the legs 29.
Figure 6 is a detail view of a part ot the frame 12, more clearly showing the socket 33 and staple 31.
The structure embodies essentially the guide bars 10 adapted for arrangement transwerselyy of and beneath the plane of the side rails 11 of a conventional bedstead trame, and an extension bedframe 12 which is mounted for movement upon said guide bars in a direction transversely of the main bed frame into positions respectively beneath and projecting laterally beyond the main frame.
ln the construction illust-rated these guide bars in order to adapt them to be applied readily to bedsteads of diilerent widths or varying slightly in width, are of extensible construction having a receiving element 10a telescopically fitted upon one end ot the body portion of the bar and adapted to be secured in adjusted relation therewith by suitable means such as a set screw 13. The

receiving element 10L is provided with an integral hanger arm 19 supporting it from one of the side rails. rferminally each guide bar is provided with means for engaging one of the side rails of the main bed frame. At that end of each guide bar which is engaged with the side rail beyond which the extension frame is to be projected in'use, there is provided a bracket 1li extending upward outside of the side rail of the bed frame and thence over and bearing upon the upper side thereof with the inner depending arm 15 provided with the terminal detent 16 which is engaged with a socket in an anchor block 18vwhich lits in the channel oi the side rail. At the other or rear end cach guide bar is supported by the receiving' element 10EL through its hanger arm 19 which is provided at its upper end with a detent 2O for engagement with a socket in an anchor lock 21 i'itted in the channel of the side rail. Obviously by extending the guide bar and locking it through the agency oi the set screw 13 it may be firmly secured in place with relation to the main bedstead trame.
The extension bedframe is provided at its ends (which are in running relation with the guide rods 10) with guide rollers 23 to traverse the guide bars of said bed frame, and adjacent one longitudinal edge said extension bedirame is provided with hooks 24 or fastening means which may be engaged with the brackets or front ends of the guide bars when the said extension frame is in the folded or collapsed position to hold the same against accidental extension.
At the center of its outer or front bar the extension frame is provided with a socket 25 for the reception of a leg 26 preferably provided with a caster roller 27 adapted to be secured in place by a set screw 28. This caster leg may be detached, it desiredv` but serves while in place as an additional guide and support for the outer or front edge of the extension bed frame in moving the latter from one position to another. As additional supporting means for the outer or front edge of the extension bedirame when in use and in ord-er that it may be enabled to uphold the weight imposedL hereon, itis provided with toldable legs 29 which in the construction illustrated are slotted as at 30 to engage staples 31 depending from the extension bedtrame, said leg being provided with lugs 32 for engagement with a socket 33 also on the bedframe. When the legs 29 are in folded positions the staples 3l enter the slots 30 to relieve strain on the means which connect. the legs to the extension bed frame. When the legs 29 are extended the lugs 32 enter the sockets 33, the legs acting to afford substantial ysupport for the extended bed frame.
Having described the invention, what is claimedas new and useful is 'l` A; yside extension for a bedstead frame having transverse guide bars provided with terminal means yfor engagement respectively with the angle iron-side rails ot the bedstead frame, an, extensionbed frame slidingly mounted upon `said guide bars for movement into: folded and extended positions with relation to the main bedframe and perinanently supported at its inner edge by said guide bars9 means for supporting the outer edge of said extension bed frame when in its extended position, said guide lbars being provided at certain of their ends with brackets lying beyond and having a return part overhanging the side rail at one side of the bed. frame and at the other ends ivi h hangerarms, said brackets and hanger arms being provided with outwardly directed studs, and. anchor blocks adapted to be seated in the angle of the be'dstead side rails and having sockets for the reception of said studs.
2. The combination with ab'edstead frame provided in its angle iron side rails with anchor blocks provided with sockets, of hanger arms provided with outwardly directed studs engaging the sockets of certain of said blocks andV having at their lower ends receiving elements, transverse guide bars telescopically adjustable in said elements and havingV at their other ends brackets lying beyond, extending upwardly and return parts overhanging one of the side rails ot the bedstead Jframe, the said overhanging parts of said brackets also having` outwardly directed studs to engage the sockets o't' the other of said blocks, an exten` sion bed trame provided with rollers mounted on said guide barsy and having movement in foldedv and extended' positions with relation to the mainY bed frame, said rollers permanently supporting the inner portion o't the extension bed' frame, and means for supponting the outer portion of said extension bed iframe when in its eX- teuded position.
ln testimony whereof he atlixes his sig- :mt Irre.
