W.'S. FLATOW.
GARMENT SEAM.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 11. 1920.

A TTORNEYS WILLIAI/I S. FLATOW, OF BROQKLYN, NEW'V YORK.
GARMENT SEAIL /I.
Application filed February 17, 1920.
To (6 1 1710971- it may 0021069 '72 Be it known tl'iat I. TIL-LIAM h Fmxro? a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York. borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and itate of New Bork, have invented a new and improved Garment Seam. of which the following: is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in garments, and it pertains more particularly to seams therein.
The primary object of the present invention is to so construct a seam that the same may be readily ripped or separated to provide for the disassembly of the several parts which go to make up the garment.
A seam constructed in accordance with the present invention is especially adapted for use in connection with mens shirts, and the same is more particularly useful for attaching the cuffs to the sleeves. and the frontmcmbers of the shirt to the sleeves, shoulder members and neckband. Owing to the char actor of collars commonly worn, shirts are subjected to wear at that portion where the front members of the shirt join the neckhand, and it very often. happens that with some styles collars the shirt will be worn through that portion before the remainder of the garment showns any indication of wear,
it is a further object of the present invention to construct a shoulder seam and neckband seam of a shirt in such a manner that the front members thereof may he removed... recut and again positioned to present an unworn surface at the base of the collar band.
It is also desirable at times to reverse the. cuffs of shirts and it is a further object of the invention to use this seam for securinc: the cuffs to the sleeves in such a manner that he cuffs may be readily removed and resewn in. the reverse position.
With the above and other objects in view. reference is had to the accoinpanying drawings inv which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a shirt constructed in accordance with. the present invention, and
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing; the same construction of the cuffs.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the shirt comprises a hack section 5, two front sections 6 and 7, and sleeve members Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. it), 1922.
Serial No. 359,368.
8. The sleeve members 8 a re secured to their respective frontsections by means of a seam 9, and said seam 9 extends upwardly and over the shoulder portion and serves to secure the front sections to the back section. as indicated by the reference character 10. The reference character ll. designates a collarband, and said collar-band is secured to the front sections 6 and 7 by means of said seam 9, as indicated by the reference character 12. The collar band 11 is secured to the back section by means of a seam 11 in the usual. manner.
Secured to each of the sleeve members 8, is a cuff 13, and each of said cuflts 13 is secured to its respective sleeve member by means of a seam 14:. which in this instance is of the same construction as the seam 9.
By reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the scams 9 and 14 are constructed in the following manner:
In this figure. the reference character 8 designates one of the sleeve members, and 13 designates the cuffs, preferably of the double type. When the cuff is attached to the sleeve member 8, by the stitching 20, a tape 21 is likewise secured in the same line of stitching- 20 in such a manner that the same is invisible when the seam is completed. As indicated by the reference character 25, however, a portion of each end of the tape is exposed in order that the same may be gripped for a purpose to he hereinafter set forth. By this construction. it will be seen that when the cuffs become worn, it is only necessary to exert a pull on the tape 21, which action rips the stitchesof the seam 20 and causes a detachment of the cuffs 13.
As more clearly shown in Fig. 1., the tape is secured in that portion of the seam 9 indi cated by the reference character 10 and extends around a portion of the collar-band 11 having its ends projected slightly beyond the edges of the seams as indicated by the reference character 21 and shown in Fig 1.
Should the front portions 6 and 7 of the shirt become worn. it will only be necessary to grip the end of the tape 21 and exert a pull thereon. which action will sever the seams 10 and 12, and leave the upper ends of the front members 6 and 7 detached from the neckband and back. After these seams have been severed, it is only necessary to re-cutthe neck portions of the front members 6 and 7 and move the front members pose of ripping up a, ga
upwardly. The i'ecut portions may now be sewn to the several parts by 21 suitable line oi: stitchmg.
of renewal or different positioning.
Claim v A shlrt having permanently attached removable front see ions the front sections of said I shirt being seenreel to the remainder of the shirt by means of tape extending throughout the side seams of the shirt, :1 portion of the arm seams oi the shirt, the shoulderseem, and a portion of the neelzband, said tape terminating' at the neckband closure and projecting slightly there-from, said tape serving to open the seam upon exerting a strain thereon.
