Description

July 2 1938.
C. S. WAGN ER GARMENT Filed April 14, 1937 Patented July 26, 1938 UNITED STATES.
GARMENT Charles 8. W rner, Harrisburg, Pa, assignor to Blough Manufacturing 00., Inc.,
Harrisburg,
Application April 14, 1937, Serial No. 135,921
2 Claims.
This invention relates to garments of that type wherein knitted cufls are attached to the sleeves or legs of the garments, an object being to provide a means whereby the cuffs can be attached to garments formed of any kind of fabric without danger of pulling away from the garment when subjected to strains.
A further object is to provide novel means for reenforcing the garment at those points where the cuifs are attached thereto whereby the coils are prevented from tearing loose either at the scams or at points in the material of the garments above the seams.
A still further object is to provide a reenforcing means which permits the secure attachment of wits to garments even though made of light material which easily ravels or frays.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
.In said drawing Figure 1- is an elevation of a portion of a garment showing the cuff attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2'2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of the portion of the garment shown in Figure 1, the out being illustrated in the position occupied thereby while being stitched to the garment.
Figure 4 is a section through a portion of the garment showing the cut! in position before the parts have been trimmed and'sewed together.
Referring to the figures, by characters of reference l designates a tubular portion of a garment, such as a'sleeve or leg and this can be made of any suitable fabric. A reenforcing band 2 of cambric or other suitable material which can be cut out. bias if desired, is applied to the inner surface of; the portion I adjacent to the edge thereof, the edge portions of the band 2 and the edge portion of the garment being inturned as shown at I and l and sewed together as at 5.
The tubular cuif 6 which is preferably of a stretchable ribbed fabric formed in a, tube, is doubled on itself and placed around the portion l-asshowninFlguresiiandiwithitsraw edges adjacent to the adjacent edge portion of the sleeve or leg. The several thicknesses of fabric pulled oil of that portio of the sleeve or leg sur- 5 rounded thereby so as to extend therebeyond as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
It has been found in practice that by providing a reeni'orcing band 2 which, as before stated,
can be cut on the bias, there is no danger of the cufl 6 pulling away from the garment when subjected to severe strain because this strain will be transmitted through the band 2 to the i'abrlc to which it is attached at two points. Consequently the fabric will not ravel or part either adjacent 15 to the stitched edge or back from the edge. Therefore a light flimsy fabric which ordinarily would ravel if supplied with cufls, can be used advantageously where the present construction is employed.
What is claimed is:
1. A garment having a tubular portion, a band within the tubular portion and extending entirely therearound, said band being attached along one edge portion to the tubular portion along an annular line spaced back from the edge of the tubular portion, a tubular cuff of double thickness attached to the edge of the tubular portion of the garment and to the other edge ofthe band, said cufl being extended beyond said tubular portion and the seam being extended inwardly from the joined parts of the tubular portion, band and cuif, the band being exposed beyond the seam and constituting means for distributing pulling strains from the cuff to those portions of the tubu- I lar portion secured to the band at points spaced back from the seam.
2. The method of producing a garment with cuffs which includes the step of sewing an endless band of lining material within the tubu- 4o lar portion of the garment at one edge thereof and along a line spaced back from the edge of the tubular portion, applying a tubular cuff of double thickness to the tubular portion of the garment so as to surround it, trimming of! the raw edges of the cuff and the corresponding raw edges of the tubular material and the band, and then sewing together the cuff, tubular portion and lining whereby, when the cufi is withdrawn from the sleeve, the stitches'of the seam will be exposed solely inside of the garment and'the band will extend from the seam and be exposed back to its point of attachment to the tubular portion to transmit pulling strains from the cuff to the tubular portion at points spaced from the seam.
