APPLICATION FILED OCT. l8. I911.

SHIRT-CUFF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 18,1917. Serial No. 197,204.
' having therein a buttonhole, or a number of such holes, and intermediate of said portion and the cuff a transversely-extending seam the wrist band portion leaving the latter and said seam intact and comprising 7 in efiect a hem for the cut edge hem of the remaining former fixed cuff, thus providing a finish for the remaining wrist portion and serving to prevent raveling of the fabric at the cut edge thereof, while said portion is adapted to have a removable cufi' buttoned thereon.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompaanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claim.
Figure 1 represents a plan view opened out of a fixed cufi and a wrist portion thereof embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of a detachable cuff that may be used in lieu of the fixed cufi shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the members shown in Fig. 1 in operative condition.
Fig. l represents a perspective view of the wrist portion shown in Fig. 1, from which the fixed cuff has been removed.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates a shirt cuff and 2 the wrist band portion thereof to which the former is attached, as in the case of a soft fixed end, said wrist band portion extending from the portion 3 of a shirt sleeve, and said culf being provided with holes 4. for'the insertion of a cufi button, said cufl being adapted to be folded on the line 5, all as well known.
The wrist band portion 2' is provided with holes 6 for buttoningpurposes as will be hereinafter more fully described.
At about the place of junction of the cuff 1 and wrist portion 2 are the seams 7 which at said place, thus uniting the plies thereof.
It will be seen that when the cuff 1 wears away which is generally at the fold line 5, it is not customary to replace it, hence it is lost and with it the shirt. In this case I Patented Jan. 21, 1919. I
. are sewed or stitched through the fabric cut oil the cufi from the wristband portion on the line 8 drawn through the cuff parallel with said seams at or near the wrist band portion 2 and so the. cuff may be thrown away, but the wrist band portion is comparatively intact and remains on the sleeve, while the cut edge 9 of the Wrist band portion has adjacent to it in said portion the scams 7 which comprise a sufiicient finish to said wrist band portion and a guard or reinforce for said out edge limiting also almost entirely the unraveling of the latter.
A practical wrist band 10 now presents itself and a separate or detached soft end 11 may be connected therewith, a form of the same being shown in Fig. 2, it bein foldable on a line the same as 5 and provided with cuff buttonholes 12, and other buttonholes 13 and 14: for connection with buttons placed in the holes 6 of said wrist band, using either the side buttonholes 13 or the central buttonhole 14;, it being evident that if desired a separate or detached linen cufi' may be connected with the wrist band 10, the same as the soft cuff l1.
It will be noted that the outer portion of the cuff 1 is of a length approximately the same as the combined length of the inner portion and the wristband so as to practically overlap and cover, and so conceal the latter when the cuff is folded thereon.
Attention is directedto the fact that the band 2 is a conventional wristband proper of the shirt, it being stitched to the sleeve and provided with buttonholes for the attachment of the separate cufl' 11, Fig. 2, after the foldable cuff 1 primarily integral with said wristband is severed from the latter along the seam 7 intermediate of said wrist band and the inner member of the folded soft cuff 1. This then leaves said wrist band a complete member of the shirt as such, but in the-manufacture of the said soft cuff the outer fold thereof is of greater length than the inner fold thereof so that and outer folds are so spaced rel-ativelg toon when the end is folded on the line 5, which is out of center of the complete and, said Out r fold not only covers said inner fold, but the entire wristband 2, and conceals the latter while the buttonholes 4 of both inner each other that when the cufiis folde said line 5, said buttonholes 4 are in register forthe insertion of the eufl' buttons as employed for holding the two folds together folded on said line, it being apparent on reference to Fi 1 that the three members, viz., the outer'fo d, the inner fold, and the'wristband are respectively of difierent lengths so that while the outer fold covers the inner fold, it 'covers also the wristband, as shown in Fig. 3. a
I am aware that a .foldable soft turn over cuff has been made of two parts of equal length with a reinforcing strip on the fold line to strengthen the same. Ifa portion of said cult is to be cut oflt'it would leave the inner fold of the cult of such length that it would extend far beyond the front edge of the coat sleeve, a matter of discomfort in wear against the hand, andnot intended as 'apreviously established wrist band of the sleeve of the shirt, as a third member thereof considering the equal-length folds of the cuff as two members, this being adifierent naezueao devicefrom=mine, and never intended for my purpose, hence have made an improvement in the art. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
4 A shirt sleeve having thereon a well-dc fined wrist band, the same being provided with holes for a cufi button for attachment of a' separate end, and a'cufi' formed of outer and inner members foldable'on each other.
ering 'a' ong theline of said seam leavin a practically finished outer edge to the remampurpose set forth.
