`CURTAIN POLE.
'APPLICAHON FILED 1AN.8,'|921.
Patented Dec..27, 19.21.
CURTAN-EOLE.
Leonesa.
Specification of Letters ratent.
Application' led January 8,1921.y Serial No. 435,890.
T all w zom t may concern:
Be it known that' l, liirnn IPIMLOTT, a citizen of the United States, residin at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and btate oihlew York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Curtain-Poles, of which the following is aspecication.
rl`his invention relates to curtain rods and more particularly to that .class of adjustable, sectional, supporting rods capable ol' being swungto various positions with respect to a wall oi' window to facilitate the hanging oit a curtain, portieres, or draperies, and likewise its removal therefrom.
@ne yof the objects of the invention is directed to a new and improved curtainv y rod and novel operating structure whereby av` section ot the same be thrown at right angles to permit the hanging of win-4 dow or wall coverings of various descriptions. i
A very important object of the invention is to provide a construction oi"- theabove character which is rigid, durable, and easy of construction, comprising` comparatively few parts, inexpensive,` easily assembled, and easily and readily operated when in position.
`With these objects in view and othersA which will be manifest and suggested as the nature and purpose of my inventionv are revealed inthe following'speciiication and drawing, wherein l have shown a practical, yet preferred embodiment thereof,
Figure'l isa perspective view showing the curtain rod partly broken away and in normal position. V
Fig. 2 is a topplan view of av portion of the rod showing the operating mechanism.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view et the same taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.'
Figs. Ll and -5 are detached views oi' theV coperating gearing for the sections of the rod and Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views of holding brackets. o
Referring to theV drawing, .wherein similar parts are designated by the same refer-z 0 which apertures 28 are provided in the respective wall brackets as shown4 in Fig. 1 of ence numerals'throughout the specification,
5 designates the curtain rod or pole con-- sistingA of a long and' short hollow section 6, 7 provided with machined or ornamental end knobs 8, 9 at their opposite ends to present an artistic appearance as is welly understood in devices oi this construction.
The inner end ot the shaft section 7 is provided with hollow, machined element 10ik which telescopically tits therein. il turning spindle 11 having a thumb nut 12 thereon is positioned substantially centrally of the rar irri,
retreated-nee.. ev,- ieai. Y
element 10 and carries a mutilated g'eai'll1` spacing collars 12a, :said gear being secured to and* held iii position on the said pindle by a screw 13 as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawing. The end 14 'of the element 10 is preferably.biturcatedto receive a cooperating gear member Abetween the ears 15 which as shown are provided with alined apertures 16 for a connecting;
pin 16@` which securely retainsnthegears'in mesh.
The innerl end ot the longer'section 6 also provided with altelescopically positioned machined member 17 therein which is formed with a shoulder 18 abutting the end ofthe section 6, said member 17 having a mutilated gear 19 formed integral therewith and cooperating with the first inentioned gear above referred to. A, lug or stop 2O on the gear 19 prevents the same and the Ysection 6v from being thrown out of engagement with its complementary section,
sufficient space being provided between the inner ends oit-,the said sections to permit the longer section 6 to be thrown atright angles trom la wall or support aswillfbe.,`
readily apparent from an inspection ofv Fig. 8.
ln order` to support the curtain rod orl Jole l have shown and rovided a wall l` i biaclietQl having a central web portionQZ f ony which is formed an integral ring 23 fork holding the short section 2, said section being retained in position by a pin or screw 24y as tional rod may be turned as above described and pointed out. The respective wall brackets are adapted to be secured to a support by any form oft suitable Jfastening elements for the drawing.
ioo
will be readily seen that after the sectional rod is placed in position on the wall supporting brackets and it is desired to place a curtain, portire orl drapery thereon, the
CJD
spindle ll is turned to the yrightandthe c0- operating gears lla, 19 or the respective sections will throw the longer section at right angles to the Wall whereupon it is again replaced in the hinged supporting bracket 25 in the Well known manner. From the above construction, it will be readily apparent that Alhave provided a novel curtain rod, which is extremely simple and highly etticient for its intended use, practical and capable or being manufactured at a vcomparatively lon7 cost andotherivise meeting the reoir'rements of ilxtures of vthis character.
in `the -accompanyi g drawings, l have illustrated` my invention embodied in one :tormfby way ci example, and which lin prac tice has been Vround to be highly satisfactory in obtaining the desired results. It will 4be obvious, Yhowever that other embodiments maylbe adopted and that various changes `in the details or construction may be resorted to by tl ose skilled in the art without departing from 'the spirit and scope vol the invention. is furthermore understood that the in 'ention is not necessarily limited or Yrestricted to the precise eleinentsshown except in'so i'aras such limitations are speciiied vin the subject-matter being claimed.
Having yshoe/n and described my invention, what l ynow-claim as new and desire to secu-re by YLetters Patent is y En 4a ixtnre ol the class described in combination with supporting brackets,a sectional rod, gearing carried by the respective sections, and means yfor operatingsaid gearing to turn Vone section With respect to the other.
a fixture -ogt' the class described in combination with supporting brackets, a sectional rod, coperating gears carried in the inner ends of the respective sections, and a spindle for actuating one of said gears to tarn one se, tion with respect to the other.
En a xture or the class described in combination with supporting brackets, a sectionalrod, separable members having mutilated cooperating gears positioned in the inner ends of said sections, and a spindle carried by one of said sections for operating one of'said gears to turn the other section in various angular positions.
et. ln a h'xture ot the class described in combination With supporting brackets, a rod `having a long and short complementary'sectlon, one of said sections being iixedto a tion one `of saidsections beine' fixed to a bracket, .separable members having Inutilated gears positioned in the Ainnerends of the respectivesections, a turning spindle for actuating the gear m `the hired section, whereby the other section may be turned at various angular positions with respect 'to 'the Y other section, and a lug or stop member formed with one of said gears for limiting the movement or' the movable sections.
6. ln a yxture or the class described in combination with supporting brackets, a sectional rod, and means forturningone of said sections at an angle with respect to the other, said means comprising a rotatable 'element supported in the :inner end of one of said sections, Y
7 In va fixture of `'the class described'in combination with supporting brackets, a sectional rod, toothed Vgears mounted in the inner ends of the respective sections and means for rotating one of said gears toinove one section angularly with respect to the other.
SQ ln a fixture of the class described in combination with supporting brackets, a Vsectional rod andmeans carried thereby yfor turning one ot said sections in various anguiar Vpositions With respect tothe other.
In testimony Whereol ailix my signature hereto. Y t
